Im thinking of upgrading to win 7 64 bit from xp, have done a compatability check and that's fine.Do I install orbiter as normal or are there any known issues and is d3d11 smooth to install, currently have 4GB RAM,is that sufficient?

Upgrading, as installing the Windows 7 x64 and moving Windows XP by the Windows 7 installer to Windows.old directory, right? I'm not aware of other 32-bit to 64-bit upgrade option.

Don't install Orbiter to "Program Files (x86)" (nor to "Program Files").

IIRC, D3D11Client requires Orbiter beta 111105, so you need to apply that beta patch before using the client.

Orbiter is 32-bit application and it can use maximally 2 GB of RAM.

No, it'll also run on your 7 64-bit system: 64 bit Windows editions can run 32 bit and 64 bit programs, while 32 bit editions can run 16 bit and 32 bit applications.

This question is related, so I'll ask it here: I am running Win 7 Professional 32-bit. My CPU supports 64-bit. I wish to upgrade to Win 7 64-bit to allow more RAM. (I'm a hardcore gamer, 3.25Gb usable RAM is not cutting it...) Is this possible without re-formatting the hard-drive?

Yes. Without reformatting, the Windows installer will move the old Windows, Program Files and user folders to Windows.old directory. Settings won't be imported and you will need to reinstall programs, but all the data you had should be backed up in the Windows.old directory.

More RAM will not improve Orbiter's performance. As Orb said previously, as a 32-bit application, it cannot use more than 2GB regardless of how much there is. There are, IIRC, workarounds to it, but Orbiter does not use these.

You can try increasing the memory limit that can be used by Orbiter to 4 GB (on 64-bit systems) by editing orbiter.exe with a hex editor, and setting Large Address Aware flag in the PE header.
