I see I'm not the only person who knows who Goldfrapp is, cool.

BTW, Simonpro, I also have heard Future Sound of London. The cool thing about internet radio is that you hear all kinds of odd stuff you'd never get on the crappy Borg FM radio stations.

Here's a few free and legal links. The first is from a guy who makes electronic instruments, and posts some of his work. Some synth classics, original ambient stuff and covers.

"No Type exists since 1998 to provide discriminating listeners with quality free music releases from artists who are simply too good for the evil music industry"

Podington Bear does some bouncy electronic traveling music.

Finally, here's the music download page from EVE Online

Here's a couple more I forgot to add to my last post.
Frank Comstock's Music From Outer Space is a classic (1962) album, perhaps the first real entry in the space music genre. I'm sure it's the inspiration for the background music from the original Star Trek series. I think it's a legal download 'cause it's out of print.

Also, the soundtrack for Destination Moon can be purchased/downloaded here.

Tex should really make a video with this song. ;)

How cow, Willy88, I saw that video when it was new! Man, it really makes you miss the ole' Columbia.

And heck, Tex would have his work cut out for him trying to beat a Rush video.

Urwumpe: those two vids you posted are cool. The first one with the Pirates footage is a good video, the music really fits. The second one, well, I don't remember a Heavy Metal series, only the movie, but that song sounds very Scorion-ish.

McWgogs: that video is just wierd. I like it.

How could I have forgotten The Dave Brubeck Quartet? Watch, listen, and be amazed at the best the Cold War West had to offer.

1966 in Berlin, Germany. A note for those not familiar with this song; Take the A Train was written by, Billy Strayhorn for Duke Ellington's jazz band, and is a reference to a NY City subway line known as the A train. Watch Joe Morello's drumwork right at 9:20; he is the COOLEST:

And the favorite, Take Five in 1961 on what looks like a TV appearance.

These four guys are considered THE best of Brubeck's lineups:
(1958-1967) Sadly, Paul Desmond died in 1977, and Morello and Wright are pretty much off the scene today, but Dave, in his 80s, is still touring and playing. I had the great honor and pleasure of seeing him perform back in 2003 in Baltimore, MD. I sat about 10 ft from the stage and I could feel the greatness eminating from the piano...

Share the best songs on your Orbiter Playlist

Knowing human beings like I often pretend to, I'm certain there's been a topic about Orbiter music preferences before, but this time it's a little more specific:
Open up orbertersound_playlist and tell us the songs you just love to have a good float to.

Morcheeba -
"Trigger Hippie"
"Shoulder Holster" ...Both good jazzy chillout songs to let you feel you're in charge when making course corrections or while docking.

Mum - "Green Grass of Tunnel" An absolutely magical song. I defy you to sing along to this in LEO and not choke up a little.

Soul Coughing -
"In Circles"
"Sugarfree Jazz"
"Soundtrack to Mary" One of my favorite bands, these three songs of theirs make perfect inner solar system cruise music.

Thievery Corporation -
"The Karminsky Experience - Exploration" C'mon, this song is about space exploration.
"The Cosmic Game" WhoooooooOOOOOOOOAAAAH. Mind = Blown.

Stereolab - "Lo Boob Oscillator" Perfect MMU music. The freedom!

Prem Joshua - "Mangalam" The ideal Big, Bustling Space Station song, especially the second half.

Portishead -
"Mysterions" This song is... well, pretty much any song by Portishead is great Outer Solar System cruise music. Even that "Fun for Me" track they did with Moloko - Dreeeeaaamy.

Oasis -
"Sunday Morning Call"
"One Way Road"
"Gas Panic! (live)" All three good acid rock songs that evoke a feeling of weightlessness. (In the same vein, the guitar freakout in "Muffin Man" by Frank Zappa.)

The Beta Band -
"Dry the Rain"
"Human Being"
"To You Alone"
"Squares" ...excellent "Nothing can touch you out here, it's too peaceful" music.

Cracker - "Low" For when you just want to jam out in orbit. Yeah, I own a personal spaceship. I am just that rad.

The Easy Star All Stars - Their cover albums "Dub Side of the Moon" and "RadioDread", especially their versions of "Time," "Any Colour You Like," "Karma Police," Subterranian Homesick Alien," and "Climbing up Walls." Their cover of "No Surprises" is especially tear-jerking in LEO.

The album "He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Still Grace the Corners of Our Rooms" by A Silver Mt. Zion:
The perfect instrumental soundtrack for gazing into the Horrible, Frigid Abyss - Real "You will never be able to get home...You will be lost forever" music. Listen to this in the Outer Solar System and you will wet yourself a little. Brrr.

Iron & Wine - "Upward Over the Mountain" You might drift, dead, through nothingness for all eternity, but it's alright... At least according to the mood of this song. If anyone ever made an Orbiter-syle realistic space combat game, this is what I would want playing over the end credits, after you sacrifice yourself to stop the villain and don't have enough dV to stop, showing you drifting through interstellar space forever, intercut with people on Earth and its colonies rebuilding their lives, and hope returning to the Sol System.

Well, that's my list of a few good tracks; now let's hear yours!

Flying an air liner to the moon
My current soundtrack:
"Air On a G-String" - The default Bach piece: quite lovely.

"American Pie" by Don McLean. Nice, feel-good tune during launch and orbital cruise.

"Click Click Boom" by Saliva. Great jam for launch and reentry.

"Return to Innocence" by Enigma. Lovely to listen to during Moon or interplanetary cruises.

Next is an instrumental piece by Janet Jackson I don't know the name of.

"Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai.

"Beloved" by VNV Nation. Now that makes some good space music, especially at the beginning.

I use these for drifting... Not all of them fit through out though :(

Porcelain - Moby
Why does my heart feel so bad - Moby
Harry's Game - Clannad ( Then I guess anything by Clannad would probably fit)
(As already mentioned) Enigma - Principles Of Lust
Invincible - Muse
In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins
Roads - Portishead
Eple - Royksopp
Vienna - Ultravox

While I'm a metal-head at heart, I do listen to just about every kind of music there is, and find that anything too amped just doesn't work for space. Partly it's because of the stock "Air on a G-String" (isn't that a stripper farting or something? couldn't resist), partly because there is so much other stuff I've heard before that has a spacy feel to it, I guess.

I have it set to auto shuffle every time, and kept the stock track, plus added -
Alan Parsons Project -
  • Hawkeye
  • Pipeline
  • The Gold Bug
  • Voyager
The Crystal Method - High Roller
Apollo 440 - Liquid Cool
Front Line Assembly - Synthetic Forms
Faithless - God is a DJ
Fantasy - Zion
Juno Reactor - High Energy Protons
The Avalanches - Electricity
Trance [] Control - Organic Meltdown
DJ Quicksilver - Lost In Space
Mars - Pump Up The Volume
Moby - We Are All Made Of Stars
Newcleus -
  • Destnation Earth
  • Space Is the Place
Delerium -
  • Heaven's Earth (Trance Mix)
  • Terra Firma (Lara's Mix)
Spice Girls - Outer Space Girls
And an old .mod file from the old Demo/scream tracker days called eagle.mod. It's a really cool techno-ish track with clips from the Lunar Landing ("Tranquility base here, the Eagle has landed" "Roger Tranquility, we copy on the ground" and others)

Heavy on the instrumental, and space oriented or feeling. :hotcool:

The Police - Message in a Bottle
Sting - Englishman in New York
AC/DC - Sin City, Thunderstruck, Shoot to Thrill
Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan, Solitude, Paranoid, War Pigs, Dying for Love
Metallica - Orion, Low Man's Lyric, Seek and Destroy
Nightwish - Islander, Last of the Wilds, Meadows of Heaven
Cream - Strange Brew, World of Pain, Sunshine of your love
Hendrix - Purple Haze, All Along the Watchtower, Manic Depression & loads of others
Gary Moore - Still got the Blues, Parisienne Walkways
Bob Dylan - Blowing in the Wind, Thunder on the Mountain
Queen - Princes of the Universe, etc
Yngwie Malmsteen - Amberdawn, April 8th, others
John Lee Hooker - Boogie Chillin', Boom Boom, One scotch one bourbon one beer
George Thorogood - Bad to the bone
Lost in Twilight - Tranquility before the Storm
The Beatles - Back in the USSR & others
That's about it. It varies over time, but these are the ones which usually stay for a long time.
And how could I forget?...Sinatra's Fly me to the moon, especially on translunar flights.

The Firefly (TV series) soundtrack, composed by Greg Edmondson. Just really evocative, moody stuff.
