Canadian fighter jets have scrambled to repel Russian bombers that intruded into Canadian airspace.

The Russian Tupolev-95 is a long-range bomber capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Canadian defence minister Peter MacKay says CF-18s were sent to intercept two of the bombers that made several attempts to enter Canadian airspace. They where found 463km from Goose Bay in the province of Newfoundland.

Military officials say there was no advance warning and Mr MacKay says all such incursions will be met with a swift response.

Intelligence analysts say the frequency of these attempts has been increasing, especially as Canada and Russia are in a race to lay claim to huge sections of the Arctic seabed believed to hold vast reserves of oil and gas.

The incursions also come during the debate over whether Canada needs a new generation of high-tech military fighter jets.

Maybe some canadian lobbyists paid a russian crew for the flight. After that they can say "oh look, we really need new interceptors !"

This also happened last February, when they tried to fly in to Canada from the Arctic. They where stopped there as well.

It actually happens jus about every month but the media only makes a deal out of it when they can make false political claims about it.

Maybe NORAD should just let them fly in and offer them a beer if they'll stop for a fly-in. Swaddle them in hospitality, and make a big scene out of it.

I mean really, they are only doing this to cause trouble; it's not like they are actually planning a real war these days? They just want to rattle our cage by probing defenses. Don't take the bait, it's a waste of jet fuel.

Waste beer instead.

Well, by "waste", I mean "serve to guests instead of hogging it all to ourselves". :)
Well, that would certainly be the Canadian way of doing it.

That, and waving our 'coon-tail hats at ICBMs as they pass overhead, on their way South...:shifty:

Why don't you just send up fighters to intercept and then get the pilots to just smile and wave at them. Then the Russians wouldn't feel so alone up there by them selves.

Well, if you are worried about ICBMs, then the Bear bombers are obviously just for show. Or maybe you think that an F-18 can protect you from ballistic missiles?

BTW, I heard a story about an American general who tried to invade Canada when the US declared war against the UK in 1812. According to the legend, his column of troops marched into a small Canadian town and the townspeople, not realizing they were being invaded, thought it was some sort of military parade and threw a party for them. The next day, the soldiers were hung over and most of them just packed up and walked home.

Not sure if it's true, but it's possible, as the US didn't have a standing army at the time and most troops mobilized were state militia men, who saw little reason to fight unless they thought their home was being invaded. There was at least one documented attempted invasion by an officer whose New York militia troops refused to leave New York, thwarting the campaign.

If it is true, then alcoholic warfare may be a viable strategy.

Two Russian Tu-95MS Bear-H strategic bombers have carried out a record-breaking 40-hour patrol over three oceans, an Air Force spokesman said.

"The Tu-95MS bombers carried out patrols over the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans and set a new flight duration record of about 40 hours, exceeding the previous record by four hours," Lt. Col. Vladimir Drik said at a news briefing on Thursday.

The crews practiced instrumental flight and carried out four in-flight refuelings from Il-78 aerial tankers, the official said.

Russia resumed strategic bomber patrol flights over the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic oceans in August 2007, following an order from then-President Vladimir Putin.

The patrols are regularly performed by Tu-95 Bear and Tu-160 Blackjack strategic bombers, and by Tu-22M3 Backfire long-range bombers.

All flights by Russian aircraft are performed in strict compliance with international law on the use of airspace over neutral waters, without intruding the airspace of other states.

He also noted that the aircraft successfully landed at their base airfield, where their families and the staff of the airbase met them. For completing this record flight, the crews will receive awards from the Dalnaya Aviatsiya (the Russian long-range bomber force). Colonel Drik added that this operation was part of an effort to attract the best young pilots to serve in the long-range aviation crews of the Russian Air Force.

I don't think there is a reason to poop bricks about it for anybody.

The Russians do this in Europe to, Britain tends to have to scramble the Typhoon to Scottish aerospace as the Russian's skim across the top of the UK as they do these patrols. It's all a game to test each other's reactions though...

Or a way to make nice photographs for the tabloids and show how primitive Russian bombers are escorted by western high-tech products.

We should maybe prepare a warbird from WW2 or Korea and send it to the next intruder for the fun of it and give it a fair chance.
