To keep this short, what do you think about Windows 8? It sounds like a very innovative design (meaning, not very good, we'll need to wait and see, but something really new). And there also are some shocking news: Microsoft is discussing whether they should make the non-professional version of Windows 8 FREE!!!!! What do you think about THAT? :)

Speaking of which, do you think that Windows will ever become open-source software like Ubuntu? Personally I hope so, but we'll never know until it actually becomes so.

Windows 8?
Already?

As for free version - about time, i'm yet to see someone who bought an actual Windows license, so them accepting the situation might be better.

Agreed. But, if Microsoft survives until then, perhaps in 2030 Windows will be free software.

It's gonna come in 2012. We plan ahead! :)

I know. But I think I'll buy one soon (Windows 7).

Guilty. I bought my Windows 2000 Pro, and my WinXP Pro. What came before was bundled with the gizmo.

Only time I've ever purchased a Windows license was through my university for a (severely) discounted price. Other than that, same, always been bundled.

and utterly useless, because there was a new generation of OS for the last ten years...

Guilty too. No doubt in russia things are a bit different (and in bosnia you could already buy the hacked alpha of Win7 at the stores a week after microsoft put it up), but I usually pay my money for a licenced version, to be able to get the updates without trouble. Windows without updates is a dangerous gamble...

Hm. I meant the version of Windows that will be available then, not Windows 7.

Survives? Microsoft isn't in the slightest bit of danger of nor surviving. They are hands down the largest vendor of operating systems on the planet. Apple may have picked up their sales a bit but their still bothing more than a yappy dog nipping at Microsoft's heels. They are also the vendor of by far and away the most commonly used development tools (Visual Studio) and business applications (Office). Microsoft isn't just surviving, it is thriving. They may not get all the hype that Apple gets over is iCrap but hype doesn't last forever - sooner or later reality catches up and Apple is going down the same road to ruin that nearly destroyed them last time - the highly restrictive way in which they decide what software may run on their devices and the fact that they go out of their way to make it impossible for users to even change a batter without paying them to do it will eventually bite them in the ass.

Look behind you.
I would say apple is already on the road to ruin. Android phones are selling alot more then ios phones and there iphone/ipod/ipad/iwhatever sales are dropping universally. I love my ipod but i would rather have a droid smartphone.

Right behind you - don't look!
What does Windows 8 have that may be of interest? Semantic data processing? Full-featured voice/body language recognition? Artificial Intelligence? Direct neural link? Four-dimensional data representation? Consensual hallucination-driven interface? Isomorphic algorhytms? Ghosts in the machine?

... Or does the disc just sparkle in the sunlight?

Same here! I love my Android Phone. It's the Mac vs PC Clone wars all over again. In those days, ridiculously restrictive, expensive and proprietary Apple was nearly crushed by the wide open PC clone market that was as open to anyone who wanted to produce a PC and load it with DOS/Windows. When I decided to go for a smart phone, I didn't even consider the iPhone because it's so proprietary and restrictive. It was an easy decision to go with an Android phone. I don't regret that decision in the least.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium, so if there's a free upgrade, hopefully it'll be an improvement. If 8 comes out in the first half of 2012, there's a chance I'd have it nonetheless, but 7 is a sufficient replacement.

I won't speak for anyone else, but I, for one, enjoy shiny things.

In all seriousness, though, Ballmer is on record for stating that the next version of Windows would be one of Microsoft's riskiest products yet. Does that translate to "bunches of cool features"? Maybe, maybe not. But at least the potential is there. :)

EDIT: Also, where did this rumor of a free version of Windows "Home" or whatever it'll be called come from?

I was just going to mention that, I hope this means it will take a radically different approach to things.

It's Microsoft. Accept it. Free "improvements" = Windows 7 Basic...

And perhaps it's gonna be a radically different thing, like it being totally free... however, as I said above, not really many chances...

Hielor is our best source about Microsoft, and he doesn't have Windows 8 on his work PC yet.

Well it doesn't exist yet. What Microsoft is doing right now is taking Windows 7 and modifying it.

Guilty as charged. :)
To be honest I'm quite satisfied with Windows 7, so I don't mind having paid for it...If I absolutely wanted a free OS I guess I'd use Linux.

And Windows 7 was made by taking Vista and modifying it, and Vista was made by taking XP and modifying it, and XP was made by taking 2000 and modifying it, and 2000 was made by taking NT and modifying it...

This isn't really a surprise to anyone, and it's not somehow unique to Microsoft. Apple does it for Mac OS, the Linux folks do it for their distros. It's pretty rare for a subsequent version of a given software product to actually be starting from scratch.
