Hi,

I was incredibly lucky and scored an AMD 6700 xt. Reading into it, it looks like the newer AMD cards sometimes have issues with DirectX 9 games. I was wondering if anybody out there had experience with running orbiter on the newer AMD cards and could provide insight? I plan on using the D3D9 graphics client.

Thanks.

Hey there!
I have no issues with my old (2016) amd r9 390 sapphire card and orbiter 2016 running d3d9 client. I don't know about their newer stuff though.

Good to hear you're having no issues. I think the DX9 issues are specifically related to the 5000/6000 RDNA cards. Anybody out there have one of those specifically?

I'm not sure if this counts as a 5000 RDNA card, but I have a 5700xt and have never had any too major issues running d3d9 orbiter. I do have an issue that causes water/wave textures to appear on modded scenery tiles, though I have no confirmation that the issue is due to the graphics card. Also, when I'm at distance from Earth with anti-aliasing enabled, these atmosphere-colored pixels that appear around the edge of the dark side of the planet. They're not too big of a deal (and I swear I saw someone else post an image showing the same thing) and I also have no evidence this is due to the graphics card either. This is just my personal experience, I have no proof that these issues are due to the card, and even if they are they haven't really impacted the orbiter experience for me much at all.

Atmosphere coloured pixels appearing around the edge of the dark side is a side effect of the atmospheric shaders. Nothing to do with graphics card or drivers. I have never had issues with dx9 games on amd graphics cards. On the contrary, I have always observed that they perform very good, and with very good stability, on amd cards. Whatever issues there may be, that is due to the game itself. Nvidia, intel, amd cards all run rhe dx9 api exactly the same way. Just with different performance. This is an old api now.

All features are mapped out, fully optimised, and stable now. There are no more changes being made to the api and drivers regarding dx9 anymore. All the new action is in DX 12 and vulkan, with some game to game optimisation for dx11 still going on.
