If I load in console-mode only it still crashes. I get the window below and then CTD.

I found that my Mars.cfg file in Orbiter 24 already contained the edits you pointed out, with one exception. The MaxPatchResolution in Orbiter 24 was 20, not 16. Will this make a significant difference?
I just looked at Mars.cfg both in Orbiter 2016 and Orbiter 2024 archives, and they are different. I didn't know the file was changed for Orbiter 2024. I should have checked this before replying. I'm really sorry for confusing you.

However, there are two points that I would like to clarify in context of using the Mars high resolution textures:
  • Can we leave MaxPatchResolution = 20 as it is, since the Mars high resolution textures are definitely less than 20?
  • The instructions for Orbiter 2016 say to use MinElevation = -22000, whereas there is MinElevation = -8300 in Orbiter 2024 archieve. Should we change it to be -22000 if we want to use high textures?

I'm glad to see the D3D9 client was preinstalled in Orbiter 2024, but there's a nitpick I wanted to point out. In the original client you had to install separately, the "post processing" tab includes the options "Light glow", "LensFlare", and "None". But here, the "LensFlare" option is not available. Is there a way to reimplement the "LensFlare" option through a patch or something?

First of all: A big thanks to all who created Orbiter 2024! (y)

Question: Is it possible to state both "Orbiter 2024" and "Orbiter 2016" in the Orbiter Downloads 'Supported Orbiter version'?
I will check my addons over the next weeks to see if they are Orbiter 2024 ready.
But I would like to retain the backwards compatibility to Orbiter 2016, at least for the near future.

Yes, it's a multi-select box. Hold CTRL while clicking to select multiple applicable options.

Late to the party; but every time I've gotten away from Orbiter, it snatches me back. With a vengeance. Happened in 2010, and again in 2016. Looking forward to "unboxing" this over the weekend. Thanks and kudos to all involved in this veritably herculean effort.

You might say orbital mechanics are a bit like riding a bicycle... loaded with RP-1. Once you learn, you don't forget.

Tried adding Orbiter_ng.ex in Nvidia control panel.
There's no reason to assign the high performance graphics (discrete video card) for "Orbiter_ng.exe". It makes sence to do that for "/Modules/Server/Orbiter.exe". But I'm not sure if this will solve your problem.

I tried adding both. It does not solve the problem.

What I HAVE been able to do is run the most recent 2024 release candidate (Orbiter 2024-rc4 pre-release from 2 weeks ago) - which loads scenarios (without planetary textures) until I add in textures (for Earth, Mars, Moon - individually or in combination). Then (after adding in textures) I get the same CTD with any/all scenarios.

If I start with a fresh install of Orbiter 2024 and REMOVE textures for Earth, Mars, and Moon it still does not work. So far I have never gotten Orbiter 2024 (aside from rc4 without textures) to work.

I already searched the forum but all given links are either dead or fail on me.
All mirrors on the old website also either do not return files, or just give an error when trying to open them.

Can someone guide me to the download links for all high res textures to install in Orbiter 2024?
I cannot install a Torrent Client (both laptops are from work).

The Europe mirror just returns HTTP 301 Moved Permenantly on all of the files, so downloading them does not react. The 302 Temporary Redirect responses also do not start a download.
USA mirror 2 and 3 are blocked by my add-blocker. I disabled that once and I started getting a bunch of pop-ups and worrying messages and again, this is a work laptop. So I want no crap on it.
USA mirror 4 only provided torrent links, which are redirected, but of course do not open.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

That's odd. I just tried downloading Surf.tree for Earth from Europe mirror and it seems working.

Now, here is a funny one:

When trying to start Orbiter 2024 (Orbiter_ng) via a desktop shortcut, it shows this error message.
It cannot find zlib.dll.

However, when starting from within the Orbiter-2024 folder, everything runs fine.
zlib.dll is present.
Orbiter with the internal graphcis client is not affected, it runs both from a shortcut or when started direct in the Orbiter-2024 folder.

Has anybody experienced this?
Any recommendation what to do?

Any chance you copied Orbiter, rather than just making a shortcut to it?

I am not aware of anyone else having this issue so far.

What is the working directory of the shortcuts? Are they pointing into the right folder? Are they set at all?

That is odd. What happens if you create a desktop shortcut to Orbiter.exe that lives inside Orbiter\Modules\Server ?

Right mouse click on the Orbiter_ng.exe, then "Create shortcut", and move (drag) the created file to desktop. It always works for me.

Thanks for the tips! But they did not work.
Maybe to mention, all worked well until yesterday, then there was a Windows update.
It seems this messed it up somehow.

I created the shortcut both by dragging with Shift-Ctrl, or by right clicking on the application and created the shortcut.
When the shortcut is in the original Orbiter-2024 directory it works.
But after the shortcut is dragged to the desktop, the error message is shown.

Also, there is a Orbiter-2024\Modules\Server\Orbiter.exe. Does not work either.
Also right-click and attach to start menu gives the error.

Re-installed Orbiter 2024, no change.

As Urwumpe already noted: Did you check the working folder? Right-click the Shortcut, select the "Shortcut" Tab and check:

I'm interested what is the exact quantity limit for elements of a mesh group in Orbiter 2024 and what it refer to (vertices/edges/faces/triangles)?

The question is related to:
This is because in Orbiter a mesh group cannot have more than 32768 vert or faces, I can't remember exactly.
