Any help is appreciated

Wolf, do you like Space Simulator?

I'm guessing that you do, as I gave you a space simulator that is in direct accordance with what you asked for specifically.

I have another space simulator to recommend to you, it is called F-Sim.

You can simulate flying around in the American space shuttle for yourself in F-Sim.

Thanks. I ve played with it in the past. I have also played with what that game is derived from, AKA Space Shuttle Mission 2007, years ago. Perfect tool to review all the orbiter's missions procedures and checklists (every single switch in the flight deck is functional). Too bad though the game is hard coded and orbital mechanics are not simulated.
And here we are going back to my previous posts... ;)

If you really want a space simulator that simulates real-life rockets and spacecrafts, why don't you try Flight Simulator X (FSX) with the additional separate add-ons for the Apollo, Soyuz, and the Space Shuttle.

In my opinion, Flight Simulator X (FSX) is an excellent flight and space simulator.

I also like other flight/ space simulators like X-Plane, Kerbal Space Program (KSP), Space Engineers, etc.

If you mean Microsoft FSX that is a flight sim, not a space sim I am afraid..
Good for some realistic addons such as PMDG products or VRS FA-18 E Superbug to mention the ones that come into my mind, but that is flight simulation, not space.
I am not aware of any FSX addons made for space except the Space Shuttle by
Captain Sim but that one is made for re entry and landing simulation, not for orbit ops.

There's Terrabuilder.com that is still in development. Their videos are quite interesting considering the limitations of the ESP engine for FSX. He wrote a complete new physics engine for it, a bit like VRS did for their SuperHornet, wich I hope will not be as laggy as VRS engine.

I hope the guy will hop on P3D 64bits so we can get rid of OOM errors that FSX was plagued with.

EDIT:
Alright I just reread the thread and to me that is pure trolling and playing with semantics.
For me the case is closed as D3D9 is finally working on OP's computer.
Anything related to other games should be adressed on their forums, not Orbiter forums.

As saying "there is no better other space sim" when then OP mentions SC and ED.
One should keep in mind that Orbiter is a "spaceflight" simulator, not a spacesim, wich is the definition of both said games (wich is what Wikipedia says as for now) you stated before.

But on a personal note, there's no better game/sim, just what we want, or what is defined comparing SC to Orbiter is like comparing Ace Combat to DCS World.
And that is purely subjective.

We are in space, and that's it. We can set their differencies but can't compare as there is nothing to compare.

Also @OP.
Saying your computer is old and outdated with games like Star Citizen wich are still deep in alpha stage is complete nonsense. Elite Dangerous in the other hand is well finished and working. The rest is just adding features and gameplay.

But if you want to try a new space game, you might want to check on Reentry on steam, it's also in alpha but it's a very cool game to get a feel on the Mercury/Gemini programs and Apollo too.

PS: also stop trying to play with huge resolutions your GPU can't handle, I have second computer with an i7 920 and an AMD R9 270, 6GB DDR3 inside and Orbiter runs very well above 60fps with everything maxed out at 1080p.
Having a higher screen resolution is silly as most of the games are dev'd for 1080 monitors first. There are only a few exceptions where games are also dev'd for higher resolution, like Elite Dangerous were you can push to 16K resolutions.

Hi Snax,

To be clear, I'm certainly not trolling around, I really had a genuine problem starting Orbiter Flight Simulator at very high video resolution settings, as it could not be started without freezing and/ or crashing when I set them at the highest available video graphics options in the simulation software itself.

If I could have run Orbiter Flight Simulator without any problems, I would not have bothered to create this troubleshooting post in the first place.

I do not think that there is a lot of differences between spaceflight and spacesim games, as technology becomes more advanced, sophisticated, and evolves to a higher level, the line and gap between these two different genres of space software programs gets closer and narrower.

In other words, new technologies is able to make spaceflight and spacesim games very similar to one another.

My computer is generally considered to be both old and outdated, as it is already a few years old.

In the information technology industry, everything changes very quickly, and even relatively new computer products can become obsolete very fast with the emergence of brand new computer technologies and brand new computer products being invented every now and then.

I do not think that my own computer system is powerful enough to run Star Citizen very well, as it definitely lacks sufficient/ adequate computing/ processing power, memory, and graphics processing capabilities to be able to run it very well.

I always try to adjust all the different video graphics settings and options in any software/ computer game that I buy to the highest possible levels available in the software/ computer game itself, in order to give me the best possible gameplay experience that I can give myself.

I do like to max out the video graphics settings to the fullest possible extent, as by doing so, I'll give myself the maximum possible gameplay experience.

If I were to set the video graphics settings to a low level and/ or have a lot of additional optional video graphics settings turned off, the videos in the software and/ or computer game itself would be very blurred, very fuzzy, and very pixelated.

I would miss out on a lot of different video details, and not be able to see things very clearly.

Obviously, low quality graphics and low quality audios provide a very poor quality gameplay experience, in contrast to the excellent quality gameplay experience that is only provided by high quality graphics and high quality audios.

It goes without saying that I only like to play any simulation software and/ or computer games in high quality graphics and high quality audios.

Who would be interested in playing any simulation software and/ or computer games in low quality graphics and low quality audios, when you are not even able to see anything being displayed in the simulation software and/ or computer game very clearly?

P.S. I do play Prepar3D, Ace Combat, and DCS World too.

That I understand but it took you 3 pages in this thread to acknkowledge every other posts to just try D3D9 and recognize the better performances versus D3D7 with your old outdated machine as you said.
That's why I'm saying you are trolling (on purpose or not) because you are stalling this conversation with off-topics and semantics.
I mean look at the quantity of paragraphs you made just to avoid giving D3D9 a try. That's clearly the opposite of good faith when we say some of some of our old computers runs better than yours in Orbiter. how do you explain that ?

I do not think that there is a lot of differences between spaceflight and spacesim games, as technology becomes more advanced, sophisticated, and evolves to a higher level, the line and gap between these two different genres of space software programs gets closer and narrower.

Actually, there a difference if we bother to have two different names for the genre.
One is about realistic flight in space playing with gravity and all.
The other is a game where there are different degrees of realism in a spaceship set in a scifi environment. For instance in Elite Dangerous you can use your FSD and travel between stars in matters of seconds, faster than light, fight against aliens, and be in the year 3305. Star Citizen is about the same but in 2949 and travelling with Quantum Drives at 0.2c (c = speed of light).
I don't think my Fer-de-Lance in BV Phe* system could go in orbit around Earth in Elite (~7800m/s) even engineered (max speed is capped to a few hundred meters per second... like 600m/s when using a boost, then the ship magically slows down to 300m/s) and it goes the same for Orbiter, I'm sure I can't travel 26'000 light years to visit Sagitarrius A* with the DeltaGlider.
And those games (SC and ED) doesn't represent physics very well, in exchange for more gameplay, that's why they are games, not flight simulators. And it's the same for X4, Freespace, StarLancer, Infinity Battlescape.
It's just games with 6DOF movements.

My computer is generally considered to be both old and outdated, as it is already a few years old.

In the information technology industry, everything changes very quickly, and even relatively new computer products can become obsolete very fast with the emergence of brand new computer technologies and brand new computer products being invented every now and then.
This may be true if you want to keep up with recent games like Battlefield V, GTA, and games that evolves each year but in the world of space and flight simulators, it's the contrary, simulators evolve veeery slowly.
It took 10 years to DCS World to have their EDGE engine, wich means you could have played DCS with the same computer for 10 years (wich I did, started DCS in 2008 with their A-10C), and it's the same for P3D, Falcon BMS Rise of Flight, IL-2 Sturmovik, and such.
They all use old engines but updated so you can still play with old machines, the exception being X-Plane 11, till X-Plane 10 you could have also play with a potato machine. With DCS World, you could till your RAM would commit suicide because they can't keep a stable game every 2 patches.

I do not think that my own computer system is powerful enough to run Star Citizen very well, as it definitely lacks sufficient/ adequate computing/ processing power, memory, and graphics processing capabilities to be able to run it very well.
No computer is, since they keep adding core techs to improve the performances. If you follow the dev, I'm sure you know we had played Star Citizen with 10fps for years just because we didn't have OCS (Object Container Streaming) and Bind Culling back then. Now the next core tech they'll add is server meshing. I mean, even the devs are lagging sometimes with their Intel Optane SSD lol.

Hmmm every simmer I guess ?
I still play Flight Simulator 2004, Orbiter 2006 and 2010, Falcon BMS.
Again I understand your dikemma, you want graphics, and gameolay, and on a old computer, It's time to make choices then I'd say, but remember we are playing with simulators, not games developped by Rockstar, DICE, etc, so everything isn't about graphics, I mean, Tetris in 4k is still Tetris like Minecraft has now 8K textures.
You are lucky to start your simmer career in 2018, now 2019 because just 3 years ago, we didn't have Orbiter 2016 and its updated graphics, DCS World didn't have EDGE but was still running on their 2003-engine (TFCGE), X-Plane 10 had the same graphics than X-Plane 9 (without addons like ortho4xp and etc) and P3D, well, it's still ESP engine actually.

In the end we do not play sims for graphisms, but for fidelity and realism.
Graphics are a well welcomed bonus.

I hope you get my point.

Hi Snax,

We can argue FOREVER on this topic and we will still never be able to reach an agreement that we can both be very happy with.

I have already stated what I wanted to say in my heart in great detail, and so have you.

Neither one of us is right or wrong, we just have different ways of seeing things and reaching our own conclusions.

I'm NOT a troll, and I'm also NOT trolling around.

I have a valid, legitimate, and authentic problem with Orbiter Flight Simulator and other brand new computer games (in terms of running them at very high quality high definition video and with all the additional graphics settings turned on), and I feel that it must be addressed in order for me to be able to have a reasonably high level of gameplay.

You can argue against EVERYTHING that I have said in my earlier posts, and still not be satisfied with my responses to them.

I'm not here to have an extensive and in-depth debate with anyone, I just need specific help to solve the video graphics issues that I'm experiencing as soon as possible.

But if you had a problem, why didn't you post some logs instead of going off-topics and unrelevant subjects ?

It's not Orbiter's fault, it's always on the end-user where the problem lies. It can be something very insignificant.
If you are okay with it, would you like my help via TeamViewer to take a look one day ? Say this Friday ? Do you have a microphone also ?
TeamViewer is a software to use another computer through the Internet, like Windows Desktop Remote Control, and VNC.

NB: Sorry if you feel offended by me saying you're a troll but you didn't help your case by not posting a dxdiag/orbiter.log and refusing to use the D3D9 by saying it "might" work when it did have better performance actually you said. Wich means you don't have a basic understanding of how work things for your computer, or Orbiter.
(Damn I sound like an elitist lol)

I'm not a very computer savvy person, and neither am I an expert at using Orbiter Flight Simulator too.

I think that I need to spend more time and effort to improve my own knowledge of computers in general, and also to become more knowledgeable at using Orbiter Flight Simulator as well.

As for the false troll accusations that you have given about me, you do not have to generalize and jump to conclusions before finding out more information for yourself about other people's unique individual situations/ problems.

In other words, get your facts straight first before making any type of false, invalid, and ridiculous things about other people.

I would gladly welcome any help, support, and assistance from you and anyone else in this particular matter.

As you have admitted yourself, you do come across as being an "elitist" in your own posts.

Maybe you should try to be more humble and modest, instead of sounding like an "elitist".

Yes it's my fault it's probably because I play ELEET DANJERUS !!1!11 IMA A GRIEFA but given a quick look at your dxdiag your machine is very capable of running Orbiter+D3D9 at max settings with a reasonnable screen resolution.
What were the symptoms again ? Low framerate when using D3D9 or something ?
Have you tried to still play at maximum settings but lowering the resolution to 720p first, then 768p untill 1080p ?
I also suspect using the antialiasing setting with HD resolutions and greater can be at fault here, especially with detailled models (if you're using ISS A2Z for example).

Is friday good for you for a quick check together ? If you use Discord we could meetup on the Orbiter-Forum server.
Here's the invite https://discord.gg/ntVSCZQ (or TeamSpeak if you have a server, both are okay for me)

I strongly disagree with you that my machine is capable of running Orbiter Flight Simulator at its maximum possible settings, because whenever I try to run it at its maximum possible settings, it always displays an error message - "Initialising a 3D environment using a hardware device failed. Try again with a software device".

I think that the only solution is for me to buy an entirely brand new better computer system with all of its many different individual components/ parts upgraded to a much higher level.

Like I have always said before, even my other brand new computer games are not able to be run effectively and efficiently at both their highest video and audio settings.

This clearly shows that my own computer system does not possess the necessary computing/ processing power, memory, and graphics processing capabilities to be able to either meet and/ or exceed both the minimum and recommended system requirements of any of the current generation of brand new computer systems sufficiently and adequately.

Luckily, there are a lot more very affordable high-end computer systems available to the general public and to the average computer consumer right now, compared to a number of years ago.

In the past, the computer industry was dominated by big and famous computer companies such as IBM, HP, Sony, etc, with their very expensive computer systems, but a lot of new and small to medium-sized computer companies have entered into the computer industry, in a specific attempt to try to compete with these traditional computer giants.

You didn't answer any of my questions, even my offfer.
So it's all the proof for me to "jump to the conclusion" you're a troll :p (and a bad one)
So friday on Discord ?

@Snax,
By offering remote assistance, you've done more than anyone should. There is a reason why he not simply says 'yes, please!'

Not answering questions and repeating previous statements which have already been answered multiple times is trolling. Perhaps not intentional, but it's trolling nonetheless. So you should not feel bad about it.

On the bright side, we learned that old, obsolete, and outdated and newer, more advanced, and more sophisticated are good, favorable, and marvelous ways to express the same damn thing for the purpose of being a wisenheimer.

Outerspace,

It's good you have unlimited funds for a new computer. But, don't blame anyone here, when you get all latest and greatest, in a new system and you still have the same problem.
You have been warned.

I wondered whether this excessive, unrestrained and exorbitant use of adjectives is a cultural thing?
