Porsche, known for its high-performance sports cars, has announced the development of its new 3D printed personalized bucket seats. The “bodyform full bucket seat” will initially be limited to 40 prototypes for use on European race tracks as early as May 2020, with customer feedback being used to develop the final street-legal models for mid 2021.

That would help with my serious butt problem, if I had a Porsche.

China has successfully completed its first 3D printing tests in the microgravity of space. A “space 3D printer”, developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), alongside a 3D printed CubeSat deployer, was launched on Tuesday the 5th of May on China’s new large carrier rocket – the Long March-5B. A few minutes after the rocket’s maiden departure from Wenchang Space Launch Center in South China’s Hainan Province, an experimental manned spacecraft (carrying no crew) separated from the 53.7m long rocket and entered orbit.

Very interesting.

Did he really put a slice of bacon on the print-bed?

Performance sports car manufacturer Porsche has worked with machine tool producer TRUMPF and automotive parts company MAHLE to 3D print pistons for the engine of its flagship 911 supercar.

Utilizing Laser Metal Fusion (LMF) 3D printing, the carmaker’s engineers have been able to optimize the structure of the automotive part for when it’s under load. AI-led additive manufacturing has also enabled Porsche to integrate a cooling duct into the component’s ‘crown.’ These features not only reduced the piston’s weight by ten percent compared to those forged by the company in series production, but they added 30 BHP to the engine’s horsepower.

Researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have identified the reasons behind microcracking observed in tungsten during additive manufacturing.

By combining simulations with high-speed video, the researchers were able to visualize the Ductile-to-Brittle Transition (DBT) of tungsten during 3D printing in real-time. Leveraging their monitoring technique, the team pinpointed variables such as residual stress, strain rate, and temperature as the reasons behind the cracking. The scientists’ discovery could act as a basis for 3D printing other crack-free metal parts, with potential applications in the defense and energy industries.
