Been working on alternate history Apollo 13 AMSO scenarios to get Lovell and Haise on the surface at Fra Mauro following the nominal mission plan per the press kit.

Here's a few scenarios.

(I added an "A" to the vessel names in these two scenarios, so it won't playback the audio from my 13 soundpack.)

CSM/LM undocking:

Code:

Ready for CSM/LM undocking and station-keeping prior to the sep maneuver. There will will be two passes over Fra Mauro post undocking prior to PDI. Undocking at GET 99 HR 16 MN. PDI at GET 103 HR 31 MN. Landing GET 103 HR 42 MN. (Nominal flight plan)

As an extra, here's an entry scenario set where I tried to get the attitudes/rates close to the real pics at SM jett to match along with the audio. During reentry, the CM flies over the historic coordinates of EI at close to the historic time. You can fly the entry right to the historic splashdown coordinates while keeping the load below 6g's.

Cool! I've always like reading through the Apollo 13 Press Kit to see how they planned out the mission. It's been awhile since I've flown a nominal Apollo 13 mission.

If only we had audio from a 13 prime crew simulator session of a normal lunar landing run. It's got to be out there somewhere. Would also be great if they released the padcom loops for all the mission pre-countdowns.

More obscure things have been dug up. After the mission, a parody reel of audio tape was put together (by the back-up crew or some of the mission controllers (can't remember which, Kranz talks about it in his book)) and played at an after-mission party. Kranz's perplexed statement, "I don't understand that, Sy," was repeated several times and exploited for laughs.

I remember during one of the official NASA documentary films for the Apollo flights (I think it was Apollo 10: Green Light for a Lunar Landing (again, can't remember)), EVA training footage was shown for the Apollo 11 mission and you could hear the radio audio of the crew practicing giving descriptions of the environment around them.

I'm 99.9% sure that all of the training audio was recorded so that the crew and flight controllers could play back the tape to get a sense of not only what they did right, but also what they might have done wrong and where they could improve in terms of reaction time and communicating clearly with each other. Many simulations resulted in dead astronauts due to someone hesitating to call out abnormal data, issues with the spacecraft, or what abort mode to use.

Apparently, Apollo 12 Commander Pete Conrad used to swear like the sailor he was during simulations, even when things were going right, or so I'm told. There's a couple instances that I've found during the mission where Dick Gordon would interrupt Pete and say something to the effect of, "Hey Pete, don't forget that we're on VOX."

---------- Post added at 03:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:36 AM ----------

In my opinion, every bit of NASA audio (minus the classified stuff) should be readily and easily available to the public unedited. I know that a good chunk of it is available on the Internet Archive but there are still some holes. I'd really like to hear the audio from Apollo 7 with the crew being grumpy due to head colds.

I have the A13 parody from archive. I also have the A12 parody film made by the backup crew on a VCR tape. Funny stuff. I'm still hoping for Gemini 11 audio. I recommend the 1994 TBS documentary "Moonshot" if you're interested in A7. Another one is a 1968 PBS one called "Log of Apollo 7".

Here's a guide to flying the reentry scenario posted above:

Starting from the no. 11 "Entry Interface" scenario (Any of the earlier ones will work since all the scenarios were saved on down from the no. 1 "SM Jett scenario". They're all the same trajectory.)

1. Roll right (from inverted +180 pitch) to +90 deg constant g attitude and maintain this.

2. When the load hits 2 g's you can roll 360 deg and back to the +90 deg constant g attitude and then maintain this. (Load will peak just below 6g's.)

3. At approx. 800 km range to go (RTG) you can again make another 360 deg roll and back to +90 deg constant g attitude and maintain this again.

4. When the range hits 500 km range to go (RTG) roll up to level horizon and then pitch up to +12 deg positive pitch (HUD Orbit) then put in and maintain about a 25-30 deg right bank angle to start working on the cross range component. (Using Map MFD as your EMS equivalent.)

5. Velocity should be bleeding off to about 3.5 k/sec when you reach 200 km RTG. This is when you should roll up level and maintain about +10 deg pitch. (HUD Orbit)

6. At 100 km RTG pitch up to +20 deg (HUD orbit) to extend the downrange capability. Velocity now approx. 2.5 k/sec.

7. At 50 km RTG velocity is bleeding off to about 1.7 k/sec. Start varying the pitch as required to reach the historic splashpoint (around +20 deg HUD Orbit) It's possible to get under 10 km or better to the historic splashdown coordinates/time (-165.2142 -21.3824)(GET 142:54:41).

Here is a free-return Apollo 13 post TLI trajectory. I was working on some alternate history abort scenarios. For this I was imagining some sort of SPS failure prior to the hybrid transfer that forces an abort without the O2 accident ever happening. All other systems otherwise fine in the service module. This returns Apollo 13 to the vicinity of the entry corridor with only one minor RCS burn required. Landing at GET 154 hrs. I added a "B" at the end of every vessel reference in the scenario to disable soundpack audio playback:

(This is tested without separating the CSM from the S-IVB. The attitude of TD&E during SEP, and the maneuver Delta-v might change it. Interesting to see that anyway.)

Code:
BEGIN_DESC
Apollo 13 post TLI. Source scenario for free return abort test.

This trajectory will enable a return to the vicinity of the entry corridor without any course corrections post TLI. Only a minor manual SM RCS course correction is required (can be flown like the historic MCC-7 with the LM, or in the CM with the Earth in the hatch window). With a CM skip maneuver, a water landing off the eastern coast of Africa is possible at around GET 154 hrs. Earth encounter PeA with no mid-course corrections is 67 km, ReA 5.23 deg, Eq. inc. 31.08 deg, LAN 350.92 Deg. Entry interface is off the western coast of southern Africa.
