Actor Alan Rickman, known for films including Harry Potter, Die Hard, Truly Madly Deeply and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, has died at the age of 69.

The star was suffering from cancer, his family said.

He became one of Britain's best-loved acting stars thanks to roles including Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films and Hans Gruber in Die Hard.

Sad news, good actor, always worth watching. Did like his "Cancel Christmas line"

I'd forgot about Galaxy Quest, great fun. "I see you managed to get your shirt off..."

He was the best Die Hard villain in the best Die Hard movie. Basically he made every scene he was in watchable, even in otherwise awful movies. And his voice and manner of speaking were unique, as Family Guy reminds us:

He was great in that movie - grumpy and brimming over with sarcasm!

...and another sci fi connection - apparently he was one of the people first considered for the part of Dave Lister in Red Dwarf (low budget BBC TV series of the '80s.)

Even Snape from Harry Potter. In the end after almost hating him for a decade-worth of movies Rickman revealed how much heart the character had in quite a touching way. He was a fine talent and will be missed...

I'm pretty sure he did the voice for the ship's robot in the movie.

They're from the early years of the baby boom and they're hitting their life expectancy. I think we can expect frequent events like these over the next decade. In general, the death rate should have some kind of boom to correspond to the baby boom. And we happen to be living in a time when so many deadly diseases have been defeated but cancer remains a major threat that increases with age.
