Question Best functional STS setup?

I'm just coming back to Orbiter after several years' absence. I remember Dave had a shuttle fleet, Gazza was working on payloads, there were a couple highly detailed KSC's, and there was AutoFCS.

...But Orbiter's changed since then. What are the best, most functional add ons available nowadays for a STS-centric installation?

This is just my humble opinion, but there is...

To use Thorton's ISS, you'll need Shuttle Fleet.

and (for now) AutoFCS doesn't work. But if you find the thread dealing with Shuttle Fleet you should find that it is on the way...

I notice that Dave's STS-135 mission is only available for the 2006 version of Orbiter, and not the 2010. What's up with that all about?

Nevermind. Found the answer on another forum. So I'm guessing then that 2006 is actually the best (at least most functional nowadays) version for the shuttle fleet?

I would disagree with this. 2006 version does have AutoFCS and STS Guidance, but the new version for 2010p1 has the RMS dialogue, the APDS dialogue, UMMU support, as well as working versions of RPOP.

I choose the 2010p1 because of the new dialogue boxes and UMMU support. It makes docking seem a little more real, with the hooks and the ring retraction.

Well I'd like to have STS-135 running. I understand now that I'm not intelligent or patient enough to do this.

The current mission isn't available for 2010. No problem. I made a separate install of 2006.

P.S., Re: 2010. I've been away from Orbiter for several years now. Am I missing something? Why would anyone put an MMU back in the shuttle? They were taken off years ago.

P.S., Re: 2010. I've been away from Orbiter for several years now. Am I missing something? Why would anyone put an MMU back in the shuttle? They were taken off years ago.

The key to getting Shuttle missions to work and you can get them to work with 2010p1, is to download ISS Fleet and the required addons for that.

To get it to work in 2010p1, I got ISS Fleet, the Well-PMA, the Columubs and KIBO and SSRMS, and Cupola add ons from francophone. I may be missing something, but somewhere, I think in the Shuttle Fleet 2006 manual, or maybe even the expansion pack manual is the list of required add-ons.

And what the 2010p1 version adds is UMMU, which is an addon that allows crew members to be on board of the ship, and they can be transferred from ship to station, disembark after landing.

I know this answer is probably too vague right now to be totally helpful, I am typing it from memory. When I get a chance, I will post the files that I have to get the whole Shuttle fleet and ISS fleet to be complete in 2010p1.

Just install the textures, modules (NO PLUGINS!!!), meshes and configs from the STS Expansion Pack 4.3, and then the
STS-132, 133 and 134 expansion packs. That should give you the new payloads, and that is all that you want.

Need the STS-122 for Space Shuttle Ultra for the OBSS

I will add a disclaimer here. I have added the Leonardo PMM from STS-133, but my current setup does not have the ACM from 134.

You want to make sure you have the current Spacecraft3, and I would recommend getting
Base Sync MFD
(which tells you how far you will pass over a certain base on a certain orbit, very useful for judging on which pass to deorbit.)

I really -do- appreciate the time you've put in to this. So much so that I was -very- careful to patiently install these one-by-one in order.

After trying to load the STS-135 scenario I pasted from above, It hangs when trying to load glasscockpit.dds. Sadly this doesn't generate an entry in the logfile which would be useful to track down what's missing/wrong.

Sorry I'm making this such a pain. I really -do- thank you for all the work you've put in!

I figured out that that's -not- the scenario file--just the ISS setup you want me to have. So I edited the STS-135 scenario file and pasted in the information posted above. This results in a loading scenario! Sadly, the assembled ISS is spinning crazily... But it's no longer crashing, and appears like it's starting to become servicable.

...ugh... looks like lots of repeat entries in there. I'm sure I was once clever enough to figure out which were the 'bad' ones, but I've tried getting rid of the dupes and result in a crash every time. Is someone out there smart enough to clean this up?

Getting the ISS to work is by far the hardest part. I did ditch the Progress and Soyuz entries, maybe that has something to do with it. For a while I had the wrong columbus mod installed and that CTD the thing every time.

I also DO NOT use the Sol_Alt set up. I instead just added the Shuttles into my own on going save where I was resupplying the ISS, and I added two additional nodes to Harmony.

I also see you are using an advanced launch pad instead of the default ones, and I admit this was something I forgot to touch on. I use Slats launch pads, and they work very well, but again, they need to be installed or the thing will crash. I got some help from some very good people here on setting them up and deleting the default, you can just search my profile and find that thread I started. It is pretty straight forward. I find them better as they are just one piece, while the package you are using has a few for each pad.

There may also be an issue where Glideslope MFD will CTD when loading up the bases, but there is a simple fix for that so no worries there.

After a first look at your scenario file, I see you have two entries for MPLM Leonardo. One is correct, the other, which is called just "Leo", is certainly not correct. The link I provided is a package of the three MPLMs and I do know they require the full name to be called correctly, and Leo is not a proper name.

And it looks like what you did was take the scenario I suggested and then added another, so there is where you will find the duplicates.

Give me a few minutes here to get my Orbiter machine up and going and I will load what you got and see if I can get it to work, and then also outline the changes so you can get a gist of it. It certainly took me a while to get the hang of setting up payloads and shuttles via editing the scenario, and I was in the exact position you are in with the crashed and the puzzlement, but trust me, there is a way for it to work, and we will figure it out.

As I'm a former game tester (and not--repeat -not- a coder!) I played with the scenario a bit more to help any stalwart scenario designers with the issues. Seems the scenario -can- be made to crash. When you hit F4 and look at the following entries...

Cupola
JEMRMS
KU2
MBS
SSRMS

...interestingly, all of these have two entries in the F4 list. More interestingly, they're not the only ones--and the remaining ones are viewable without issue or incident.

It strikes me that you need a little more patience after being away and start slowly. Make a "clean" 2006 P1 Orbiter installation, adding only Orbitersound 3.5 and UMMU 2.0. Save that as your "base" installation, and then load the Shuttle Fleet V4.3 and next the full STS Expansion Pack V4.3. Then, follow the instructions in the "Setup Doc" that comes with the main Expansion Pack, load the necessary third-party add-ons in the order listed, then re-install the main expansion pack last. Then follow the instructions in the various additional expansion pack series and load them in chronological order, with the STS-135 expansion pack last. When this is working to your satisfaction, then you can slowly advance into Orbiter 2010 P1 with Shuttle Fleet V4.7, ISS fleet V4.5, etc. In time, I will be releasing a complete Expansion pack for Orbiter 2010 P1, but right now I'm still working with Mike on an updated AutoFCS and a new Shuttle Fleet V4.8 that will be the final Shuttle Fleet vehicle, along with ISS fleet V4.8 as well. I suspect that if you truly loaded the Orbiter 2006 items in the order you listed, (essentially backwards) it isn't a surprise that it didn't work. The expansion pack series has been developed over the past several years, and I know that there are many users that are having no problems.

I tried the scenario you posted as a stand-alone, and it had the initial issue--until I realized it's just the ISS portion of a scenario. =)

So yes, I just tacked it in to Dave413's STS-135 scenario. This might be 'bad,' but at least it loads. =)

I'm just needing to clean it up now. Apparently I'm on a mission. =)

I am taking a look at yours now, minus the duplicate modules, as that will certainly cause problems.

Also I should point out, the lines for fssa and fssb and the pad lights are for Slats LC-39 which you do not have. You can replace those with the KC-39 lines you have for that Launch Complex 39.

Just going to add my opinion here. Your question was what is the most functional installation option for the Shuttle Fleet. In my opinion, this is Orbiter 2006 P1, with the Shuttle Fleet and Expansion Packs, and all scenario packs, hands down. You have the most complete list of mission scenarios, and payloads. All you have to do is install the addons listed in the Setup Doc of the expansion pack, in the order they are listed, and then install the scenario packs for STS-132 and up, and you're golden. I just ran through the install process 2 days ago and everything fired up perfectly the first time.

Yes, 2006 P1 is outdated. Yes, 2010 P1 is better. But it took me all of 15 minutes to download and install all the addons and get a functional, complete, Shuttle Fleet.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll be the first to admit it is a PEBCAK error, and even possibly even an ID10T error on my part.

I'll try a 2006 install again using your method! I generally -do- look for install docs. In the addon doc folder. I didn't even -look- for a setup doc folder. (Although I see now you even have the bloody thing underlined on the download page!) My mistake.
