On and off Orbiter user for many years, please forgive the dumb question. Is there a way for the MMU to grapple Carina? Thanks!

yes, just float up to it, and use the shortcut key for grapple.
Incorrect. There's no way the MMU can grab the Carina. If you want to retrieve it, use the SRMS.

So really the MMU is just there to pracitce orbital mechanics. Doesn't really have a purpose?

Just like the real one. It really served no purpose as the orbiter with it's RMS was far more superior in manueverability. It was only used on a few missions prior to the Challenger accident after which it got scrapped.

Since the MMU has a virtual docking port on it to enable "docking" with the orbiter, all you need to do is to add a docking port to Carina on whatever side you'd like the astronaut to grab it from.

Look in the Orbiter manual for instructins on how to add docking ports to a vessel's config file.
