I have just downloaded Orbiter and i can't find anywhere how to see things externally. How do you do it?

The information you seek is printed very clearly in the Orbiter user manual located in your Orbiter installation 'Doc' folder.
You can also use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom out and back in. Hold right mouse button down and move your mouse to pan the camera as well.
