The INS Sindhurakshak (S63) (Transl.: Sea protector) has exploded after a fire started in the port of Mumbai, destroying the submarine with 18 sailors still missing. The S63 was prepared to leave port for the first time after a number of refits, and thus was also equipped with live ordnance.
The explosion damaged also another submarine slightly.
The submarine already had a battery compartment fire in 2010, the Indian submarines, derived from the Russian Kilo class, are infamous for their technical issues, there are quite a few incidents during their patrols, that are known. In 2008, another submarine of the class collided with a freighter.
The Indian minister of defense has confirmed fatalities, but does not yet tell how many died.
The submarine is very likely a full loss, especially the torpedo compartment is a twisted heap of metal now.
