Ok, I've got a question and it may not have an answer, but here goes.

When I use the XR5 Payload manager to put IMS modules into the payload bay, the payload manager comes up with HUMONGOUS names for each module based on the modules name, its full description, the directory that it's located, and the location where it's attached to the payload bay of the XR5. My question is this:

Q) Is there any way to rename the module after it's been placed in the payload bay short of shutting down Orbiter, opening the scenario file in notepad, and manually editing the module names in the scenario file?

I've been doing this since mission 1 on my Lunar Station building and now that I've gotten up to mission 107 it's getting to be rather annoying to have to open and shift through a HUMONGOUS scenario file just to get to the bottom to change the names on 2 dozen new modules that I'm adding each mission.

It's impossible, as far as I know. Then again, what I know isn't that much at all...

Unfortunately correct. Orbiter doesn't provide a method to change a vessel's name after creation.

A solution worse than the cause

Unfortunately correct. Orbiter doesn't provide a method to change a vessel's name after creation.

Well, if I create the module using the scenario editor I can name it whatever I want. I then place it on the moon surface next to the XR5 at Brighton Beach and then 'load' it into the XR5.

That solution is worse than the cause though, so I guess I'll just continue to manually name my modules in the scenario file.

No repro on that. Could you post the content of (Current state).scn as it is in between step 10 and step 11?

Hmm :/

I suspected it could be a problem on my end with a missing mesh but I copied and pasted the files for SSBB 4.0 then 4.1B, and found the problematic mesh file was present in my textures folder.

Sorry, didn't see your post back there, you ninja'd me. The log doesn't show anything unusual, so any crash happens on SimStart, not on loadup. Since Orbiter at that point still shows the last texture loaded on the screen, it can give the impression that there is a problem with loading that texture, but that would show in the log.

Could you post the scenario that causes the crash? For that matter, wait until RC6, since it's possible that the major problem in RC5 is already responsible for this crash.

Right. It actually is related to the problem reported by PeterRoss: It's the food supply getting stored incorrectly, just that in your case, it's an incredibly big number instead of a really small one as it is in the case of PeterRoss. Since the behavior is currently undefined, that's not surprising. I.E. the mass of your CM doesn't actually increase, it just has a few megatons of food loaded... It should go away with RC6, but it won't work retroactively (i.e. in scenarios where there is already a ludicrous ammount of food, it won't go away, but it won't be there for new vessels).

I'll upload RC6 somewhen today. I already fixed this particular problem, and wanted to wait with a release to see if I could fix your problem too, but now that it's pretty much certain the two are one and the same there's no reason to wait longer.

Gee Jedidia, you're uploading new RCs as fast as I can fly Lunar Station missions.

Well, if you have a serious bug and only have to delete two slashes to fix it, it's rather easy...

Yup, and I've been lazy and only flying 2-3 Lunar Station missions each week. Guess my summer flying schedule is officially over (I was flying 1-3 missions a day this summer).

This is something that might be helpful.

I had lots of problems with CTDs loading scenarios with IMS vessels, and I found out that the problem was related to old vessels configurations from previous versions lying around in the vessel folder.

In the scenario editor, these modules appeared right under the IMS folder, and not in sub-folders.
Once I deleted all the files and copied the fresh ones from the latest version, all works well.

Sure, kind of obvious troubleshooting, but might be helpful for others dealing with different versions installed over the same Orbiter install.

2 Warnings during integration

I've just discovered the hard way that one cannot perform an integration of a HUMONGOUS IMS ship if either of these 2 activities are currently running on your computer:

  1. Complete antivirus scan of your hard drive
  2. Defragging of your hard drive
In both instances, I got CTD's, no matter how slowly I tried to do the integrations. The defragging actually is harder than the antivirus scan, as I noticed my FPS during integration dropping from 60 FPS (the maximum D3D9 will allow) down to around 39-40 FPS while the defrag was running whereas it stayed up around 60 FPS while virus scanning. During the virus scan it CTD about every 100-200 integrations, during the defrag, every 3-4 iterations.

This is probably due to the saving of the scenario file during each step of the integration. As the scenario file I was trying to integrate is around 500Mb, saving 500Mb to the hard drive every 2-3 seconds while the computer is trying to defrag or virus scan is probably not a smart thing.

I can only assume you mean 500 Kb...

Anyways, sorry, didn't get around to upload RC6 yesterday. It's up now, should take care of the food storage problem, but only in scenarios that are not already corrupted (i.e. not saved in RC5).

Yes, I meant 500 Kb. Still a massive scenario file. :)

I was messing around with a landable spacecraft, and I have a few problems:

- the landing gear modules are invisible (I'm I missing some mesh? I have all the dependencies installed as far as I know)
- regardless of the landing gear being present, there's no vertical offset (vessel intersects the horizon at mid point)
- When landed, the vessel sinks bellow the surface (and then "teleports" into space) as soon as I use any propulsion

Perhaps this isn't even implemented, I dont know. Checked the docks but didn't find any specific info.

Other than that, been having the greatest fun spaceship building! And based on realistic physics!
Flying solar power spacecraft is fun. You have to do your maneuvers over the lit part of the planet. That adds a lot to a simulation, because you are actually piloting!

How about we open a thread to share spacecraft / space station layouts that can be assembled using our IMS modules ? Like a simple list of how many and what modules to use, heights, etc.

Ability to land IMS vessels is the function I've injected into the code while Jedidia was away, and since I'm no coder I've made only basics, which means no user interface at all. You have to define your touchdown manually by changing the
Code:
  TDPOINT 0,0,0 0,0,0 0,0,0
string of the scenario file. First is the coordinates of forwad TP, ssecond is the aft-left and third is the aft-right (if I recall correct). Once you've made these chenges and started the scenario this information should be safely saved and loaded in all subsequent sessions.
Touchdown Leg is just an eye candy. And, yes, its mesh is missed from the RC 6 pack. Jedidia, should I upload the complete pack with all meshes and preview pics which seems like escaped your release?

Thanks for the info.

To avoid any confusion regarding the landing points, the IMS integration should reject more than 3. As it is I can add many.

I understand eye candy, sure, but at least the naming should be different for those: something like "gear visual" to distinguish from "touchdown point".

Well, since it's eye-candy you can integrate as many gears as you want. IMS doesn't even know it has anything to do with TD points, it's just an animated module with no other functions from the core's POV.

Only trying to help:

Given that IMS works based on the integrations of modules from within Orbiter, i'm assuming that, at some point in the future, the landing points will be computed automatically.

Therefore, it's logical to use the landing gear as origin coordinates for them. My suggestion was only a way to make that process more explicit.

Personally I have no problem with editing the file by hand, of course :)

I understand your will to help in IMS development, but it's pretty much finished. Jedidia has decided to start the development of IMS2, and its architecture will quite differ from the one of IMS. I hope it will have the ability to define touchdown points and maybe even generate them automatically, but it's a long way to see.

I tried loading an IMS module-present scenario on RC6 this time and got the same thing.. CTD when loading SBB104.dds and IMS.dll being the fault.
