IMFD is actually able to handle the main burn with different thruster groups. I'm not sure on what criterions it chooses the group to work with, but if hovers are the only thing you've got, it will work with them.

It can be set from the configuration screen.

I think it just checks for the presence of Orbiter's default thruster groups (thgroup_main, thgroup_hover, etc.) in specified order.

Thank you both, I tried it today before work and it didn't work - had engines in group 1, will try to integrate them as group 2.

One thing - is it possible in the IMS "flight" subdisplay that you've mixed prograde and retrograde?

No it's not, pro and retro buttons are working correctly. Please don't forget that stock autopilots use the frame of reference of the body which has the most gravitational influence on you at the moment and not the one selected on the HUD or MFD. It may render HUD confusing too, especially in gas giant systems.

---------- Post added at 07:31 ---------- Previous post was at 07:20 ----------

Can't help with IMFD though, never used it, especially with landers.

Since you're using IMFD, The "SOI" flag in IMFD's map program will show the gravitational sphere of influence for bodies, which is the changeover points for the hud/autopilots.

I got the same results with other docking modules. Hope this could help if you're not aware yet. Many thanks for maintaining this great addon in spite of the contingencies of the real-life.

Thank you for making clear the dependence on the reference concerning pro- and retrograde, I am sorry I brought this up so quickly.

This is indeed a great add-on, and its perspective on Orbiter is as different as a new sim is. It gives great an insight into the harsh and unforgiving economy of building a spaceship.

And thanks for the hint on IMFD handling hover engines - I checked through your starter's guide for IMS and assigned my engines the correct group - 3 for hover - and IMFD works perfectly!

Here is my newest concept for interplanetary exploration.

Due to severe lack of budget and at the same time an urge for a prestige project, this interplanetary ship can only house 1 crew member for a lifetime, with only basic life support and no entertainment at all. A volunteer, if no one enlists on his own will, will be found by other means.

After the S.M.R.S. St. Georg has been disassembled to build the S.M.R.S. Novara, the Novara has now been split again into a trans-planetary insertion stage and an orbital exploration ship, equipped with a non-atmospheric moon lander.

Here it is, Seiner Majestät Raumschiff Admiral Tegetthoff!

Bah, the new beta crashes when you try to unseal CM with this message in the log:

Both of those calls are not from IMS, but they are probably not what makes Orbiter crash. I wouldn't have expected it to work with the new Beta anyways, that will require a bit more work. That the crash happens on unsealing suggests that there's conflicts in temperature managment, but I have no idea what exactly could be causing this, nor will I have any for some time to come. Orbiter Beta will become a priority once I implement client compatibility.

Also, nothing I can do about the black Boxes, nor was bugfixing a priority of the new Beta, so no surprises there.

I'm just trying out this wonderful addon. Can't believe I didn't notice it earlier...

I have one problem, maybe I'm a bad googler, but I can't seem to find answer for it:

I just built a test ship to see how things work. I put 5 RCS engines in various parts of the ship, so it would be capable of any rotation and translation direction.

However, if I rotate, ship also translates a bit. And if I translate, it rotates. I believe this is caused by RCS engines imbalance. In some cases some RCS engines should apply less thrust than others, so ship would only rotate/translate as desired.
How do I fix this problem? I can't make COG perfectly in between RCS engines, because modules are of different weight, dimensions, and so on.

Here it is. By the way, as I tried integrating engines into this ship before, thrust vector was wrong (it was 90 degrees to the right) although the engines pointed in the right direction. This time, vector is correct. Maybe a bug?

By the way, why are these engines overheating when I run them? there is a cooling system, a radiator, what am I missing?

Well, you can't fix it...

Radiator deployed? Radiator large enough? radiator temperature low enough? engine assigned to radiator in the first place? lots of stuff that can go wrong with radiators...

Hi, Jedida, how's it going? :hello:

We have engines efficiency set too low in our configs. Change it in engine's config file into 99.9999, you will have no need in radiators connected to engines at all.

I'll have a look at your scenario later when I'm home.

What do you mean? Then how I can make any kind of spacecraft that is capable of docking or traveling anywhere? (if I try to rotate in trans-planetary route, I'll ruin my trajectory).
How do other people deal with this thing when making their spacecraft with IMS?

I might be missing something, but I can't seem to find the way to deploy radiators (the ones that are supposed to be deployed). When I integrate them in the ship, they don't show up in the list. In comparison, solar panels do show up, and I can deploy them, but not radiators.
And I can't find a way to assign radiators to engines, cooling systems or anything else. Where is that "assign" button?

Docking with larger vessels is a pain, that's true, and there's plans to remedy this in the future, but currently I have no Idea when I'll be able to pick up development again. You don't need to worry about your trajectory, though. The translation introduced for a more or less sensibly built vessel is negligible for trajectory planning.

I might be missing something, but I can't seem to find the way to deploy radiators

They're not in the list, you have to click their icons in the temperature control screen. Once a radiator shows up in the module info, you can assign modules to it by clicking on them in the modules list, and you'll see the deployment button too. There's a link to preliminary, but mostly complete docummentation in the first post of this thread.

Hi, Jedida, how's it going?

Orbiter Forum seems to be working correctly again for me since yesterday evening, unless this is just a passing fad chances of me picking up development again have increased a bit. But I have a lot of work piling up, and the kids aren't helping very much... Probably won't get around to it this month, and half of the next is already booked for workshops. Maybe I can get something akin to a vacation around christmass in which I'll have some time to work on IMS... :shifty:

to laukejas:
I checked your vessel. Its rotation goes almost flawlessly, and its translation goes badly because of the same exact probem you've mentioned - RCS modules placement is unbalanced. It's a problem of this exact vessel's design, IMS just can't adjust RCS thrust by itself. I can tell in advance that it is not hard at all to desing vessels with RCS placed correctly. In your particular case the forwardmost set of RCS thrusters is unneded if not unwanted.
You have too little radiator surface for such a vessel too, and you HAVE to deploy radiator even if it looks like it doesn't need to be deployed (it is an IMS limitation currently). You have to assign each module to some radiator too.
You can read more about radiators management (and pretty anything else about IMS) here:

http://orbiter-forum.com/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=248

Radiators descibed in the first post in the thread, in Engineering Panel / The temperature screen chapter.
