Well, how time flies much faster on a space station than on a Space Shuttle, even if the mission elapse time are the same! (perhaps because no one really tracks daily work on the ISS as oppose to even a scientific oriented STS mission)

And so after a happy 10 days trip in space, Andreas Mogensen and Aydyn Aimbertov have to say goodbye to space for the time being as they close out their trip with the return back to Earth just hours away. Also coming back is Gennady Padalka, who has accompanied the one-year crew on the first half of their mission and has now already broken the all time record for someone staying in space, logging 879 days in orbit. This is more than 2 months more than the previous record held by the legendary Sergei Krikalev!

Soyuz TMA-16M, which has been docked since late March, will undock from the ISS at 21:29 UTC. De-orbit burn should start at 23:59 UTC with landing planned at 00:51 UTC.

Safe journeys back home for the trio! :hailprobe:

Another crew rotation of the ISS is underway!

Firstly, the arrival part will happen today. The crew of Soyuz TMA-17M, Kjell Lindgren of NASA, Oleg Kononenko of Roscosmos and Kimiya Yui of JAXA, will undock from the ISS at 09:47 UTC. De-orbit burn should start at 12:17 UTC with landing planned at 13:10 UTC, just as the sun sets below the Kazakhstan grasslands.

As always, safe journeys back home for the trio! :hailprobe:

So what would you choose? Staying in orbit for another 3 months out of Earth's reach or landing into a freezing snowy night in Kazakhstan?

Well I'll certainly choose the later. Welcome back!

So it is......the big day of Tim Peake, the day that the British finally have a government sponsored representative in space! After throttling back on spaceflight development funding for years, this flight of the Eurofighter ace is certainly a milestone that the UK is now finally putting the cosmos back on the thinking table.

We also have another Tim on board the next ISS crew - NASA's Tim Kopra is finally back after missing out on STS-133 4 years ago when he broke his arm during downtime of Space Shuttle Discovery. Well - he will get a lot more time in microgravity this time!

Rounding out is one of the famous cosmonauts who seemed to have never smiled  - Roscosmos' super-veteran cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko is on his 6th flight to space and the 5th space station assignment since the Mir days. This flight will extend his time in space to over 2 years in total.

Safe journey to the station and back! :hailprobe:

Good launch and already in the 2º stage.
The flames from 2º stage ignition were visible thru the window :hailprobe:.

Helen Sharman was first, but I think she had to change citizenship to USA to get a flight. As far as I know Peake is the first UK national in orbit.

EDIT She is a British citizen, so I got that wrong.

I think you're thinking of Michael Foale. Foale is 100% UK but became a naturalized US citizen and then applied to become a career NASA astronaut (Mission Specialist).

AFAIK Foale and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Patrick"]Nicholas Patrick[/ame] have dual citizenships.

I'm not sure how to classify [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piers_Sellers"]Piers Sellers[/ame] or [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Shuttleworth"]Mark Shuttleworth[/ame]

Well, more than I knew about:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35103788

Tim Peake is the UK's first official astronaut and the first British astronaut to go to the International Space Station.

However, he is not the first Briton in space.

According to the British Interplanetary Society, he is the seventh person born in the UK to have left the planet.
