NASA: Station Crew Starts Very Busy Week

The crew of 9 is now aboard the station.

All right, the Olympic torch is going into space in an hour from now! Well of course this is not the only task that will be done by Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy in this high-profile EVA - the main task is to install a pointing platform for a high-definition camera from the Canadian company Urethcast that will be installed in another EVA next month that will provide 24/7 HD video of the Earth from the ISS for subscribers. Also the two cosmonauts will retrieve an experiment, relocate one foot restraint and do exterior photo documentation of the Russian segment.

The torch looks a bit like a deadly sharp alien blade but nice views anyway :lol: Also good to see EVA time used for "non-strictly essential" activities, it proves some degree of confidence. :thumbup:

Well I have just posted about the "cubesat launch fiesta" that will come during the next 2 days, but wait (oh yes!) there's more: 4 cubesats that arrived at the ISS on HTV-4 in August will be deployed from the experiment airlock at the Japanese laboratory module today and tomorrow! 3 of them: ArduSat 1 & ArduSat X from the US (which will be operated by a large number of student and amateur teams) and PicoDragon from Vietnam will be deployed in just over an hour from now; while the larger TechEdSat 3 from NASA and 2 US universities will be deployed tomorrow. Let me see if there will be NASA TV coverage of them....

Well the ISS thermal control system is down again - one of the two cooling loops had a failure in a control valve that refused to close, making the loop too cold and had to shutdown, taking down half of the US side's electricity with it. An EVA would be needed ASAP to replace it, but since the water-in-the-helmet issue has yet to be officially cleared......

It seems unlikely to me that this issue will reproduce in other suits
Russian EVAs still go along, why not use their suits?
Does it matter if an American repairs that or a Russian? It's not like anyone up there has done this specific repair before.

Yeah I can't see how the EVA can be blocked by this problem - they already got 3 usable USA EVA suits on the ISS (including the very one that leaked).

Now the problem is how long will it take to R&R? The valve is inside the pump module A, which as you may still remember took 3 long EVAs to get that pump replaced in 2010.....

Yay, EVAs for Christmas! (except for those working at Houston) And as a bonus there's a Russian EVA already planned on December 27th that should not be affected by the cooling system problems....

Rather disconcerting they have to use the same, though repaired, suit worn by Luca Parmitano when it leaked water into the helmet.
