The next step in adding to your NXT is DIY.

As complicated as it all sounds, making your own sensor for the NXT is easy. There are basically 2 prototype boards you can use. There is the Mindsensors kits or my favourite the HiTechnic sensor prototype board.

The HiTechnic board is probably better if you are just starting out or need some versatility. The board has a number of digital I/O and analogue inputs, as well has some low current power outputs. The Mindsensors by contrast has an analogue input or a digital input kit.

You can then get the sensor (or even sensors) as normal electronic components. You could group other circuts into the sensor including displays.

In this way you could use your NXT brick has a main controller for a real robot made from other materials. If you want to go further the fully spec sheet on the NXT sytem is availbe from the mindstorms site under 'Xtreme NXT.

Really the possiblities with the NXT are larger than just with Lego itself.
