I've thought that this type of multiplayer would be best suited for Orbiter. Instead of having an environment where everyone is flying around the solar system in their own vessel carrying out different missions (which instantly creates problems due to time warp differences), you instead have an environment where those involved are all inside the same vessel. (Perhaps each
player could be represented by a different UMMU.)
The idea would be that each person would have a role to play aboard the ship. Currently though, Orbiter isn't really designed with this kind of
play in mind. Orbiter is very much intended to be a single person experience, so if someone some how patched together a multiplayer vessel, I'm not sure how well it would work in practice.
Suppose 2 players are in a basic 200x200km low earth orbit inside the Arrow Freighter. How do you decide how you're going to allocate tasks in a way that keeps both people involved enough in the experience as to avoid just having 1 guy running the show and 1 guy sitting on his hands the whole time?
And what if you wanted a 3rd or a 4th person? How do you find enough things for each person to do? It only takes 1 person to set up TransX or IMFD to go to Mars (or whatever). So what do the other people do?
It would be cool to have a large SciFi vessel like the Arrow Freighter and be able to walk around inside the ship and pass by other
players. Each
player could go to their station and look at their various displays and contribute the necessary input to carry out the overarching mission.
Fun to think about, but it won't happen.
