I speculated that it might have been NASA's request because SpaceX said they wanted this next landing attempt to be on land back at the launch site.

They wanted this before the last landing failed again, despite lots of good hope. But as it did not land successfully and crashed explosively enough to cause widespread damage, its absolutely reasonable to not push luck too far.

In other news (now so routine that even I missed it!), the CRS-6 Dragon has sneaked through our radars and left the ISS an hour ago at 11:04 UTC.

De-orbit burn is planned at 15:49 UTC with splashdown at 16:42 UTC.

With no fanfare....

SpaceX @SpaceX
Splashdown confirmed of Dragon in the Pacific Ocean at 12:42 pm ET, about 155 miles SW of Long Beach, CA.

That's 8 Dragons returned since 2010! How time flies!

Just a reminder, SpaceX is going to attempt another ship landing.

If this launch goes well, it'll put them on 6 successful launches this year - tied with last year. But with only half of the year over, they're well on track for their 10+ scheduled launches this year.

Hm. I'm thinking it'll be installed directly on PMA-2 but I'm not sure if there will clearance for that with Dragon berthed, so PMA-3 maybe?

The reason I don't think so is because it requires an EVA, and I don't think any are planned til after July.

Well, they need Kjell Lindgren up as Kelly's partner to install the IDA and that'll take another month.

As much as I'd love to see #4 happen... #3'd be awesome to see just once. After all, that barge has already proven to be a tough nut to crack. (see first barge/rocket contact incident...) So, sinking it would need a spectacularly energetic hit...
