They're cooled with liquid hydrogen, the second coldest liquid in the Universe.

Right. And the exhaust of the SSMEs is pure steam. And because of the flow of the exhaust at the end of the nozzles, the SSMEs are inside a steam cloud during ascent.

Urwumpe - how did the ice get on the engines? They were just burning a moment ago, now they're iced up?

What Dave S said. Believe it or not, the cooling of the engines using their own fuel is so effective that ice forms on the outside of parts of them even as the interior is furiously hot.

I have 2 Questions to ask.
1. Did any debris Hit the space shuttle?
2. Why did I not have any sound when I wear watching Nasa Tv?

1. Maybe, NASA doesn't know for sure yet.

2. The cameras mounted on the spacecraft do not have microphones, and after the first few minutes there is no air to carry sound anyway.

no I could Not hear the Count down for some reason It might of been the computer I was using

Omg i totally forgot bout discovery :censored: oh my days this has p-ied me off so much now.I saw the ISS go passed earlier bout 10:00 cause my bro smokes and he noticed it and i said to him, they have a blocked toilet on there, he said a blocked toilet they can`t have they just let the waste go out into space .And this has got me thinking how does there toliet work on the ISS or in space for that matter, i know like for apollo missions they just dump it into space but what bout ISS?

Carl

Here`s a video of the launch i`m a happy chappy now i`ve seen it.:D i can go to bed in a good mood now:lol:

For the ISS I believe that some of said waste goes in the soyuz-progress vessel before it makes its fiery show in the upper atmosphere. Correct me if I'm wrong.

anyone else see that smaller-sized piece of debris smack into the heat shield about 15-35 seconds before they reached no return? hopefully nothing troublesome.

anyway, great mission, cant wait to see the new japanese hardware in action!

Yeah. I posted that as soon as I saw it on the launch replays. About 3m75s into the launch something comes off the tank and almost certainly seems to strike the orbiter forward of the starboard wing.

I`m just looking forward to them returning safely, i was watching sky news last night and they said about the foam and that it posts no threat, ain`t that what they said bout the foam off columbia?

It won't pose a threat to THIS flight, no. But whichever way you look at it, there were still foam loss events. It may have only been luck that they happened so late into the launch that they couldn't damage the TPS. If the tank can lose foam at four minutes, it can lose foam at one.

Flight controllers were aware of the foam strike to Columbia, the same way they had been aware of strikes in past missions. No one ever considered a strike capable of punching a clean hole in RCC until after the investigation, though. So they considered it to be safe.
