As you know I have been talking about the rumors (All but confirmed now) that Google will open source the VP8 codec from ON2 technologies who they recently acquired. This is the same company that opened sourced VP3 otherwise known as Theora (Ogg Video) Internet eons ago.

Today (Its past 12 over here) Is the prime and rumored time they will announce it at their "Google I/O Conference" http://code.google.com/events/io/2010/

According to Newteeveeblog http://newteevee.com/2010/05/17/where-to-watch-google-io-online/ They will use the days to announce it and Google TV which also is supposed to be revolutionary.

Apparantly keynotes are expected at

Here’s the exact schedule of the keynotes:

  • Day 1 Keynote: Wednesday, May 19, 9:00-10:30 a.m. PT
  • Day 2 Keynote: Thursday, May 20, 8:30-10:00 a.m. PT

To watch the fun

Unfortunately, Google I/O has been sold out since early March. However, you’ll be able to follow the fun through the keynote live stream available at YouTube.com/GoogleDevelopers.

Tomorrow may be the day you HTML5 fans have dreamed about. A free codec that not only takes on H264 but likely beats it!

Google have already changed the internet, and not always for the better. And there have been many codecs tipped to "take on and likely beat" h.264.

In short, I'll believe it when I see it. Though I won't weep for the end of the damnable flash video player.

Can't you smell my T levels?

True, although I have trouble realizing what are the negatives of Google apart from scanning your emails and documents, while you don't need to use Gmail (etc) to use Google search engine. Also, let's not forget that in the same time Google donates great sums for Internet anonymity projects like Freenet and Tor, as well as assigns students for these and other open source projects through Google Summer Of Code.
They're controversial but they don't eat babies. Is that a diversion? It may be, but it really depends on the people behind it.

Anyway, thanks for the news Zachstar :) Let's see what happens ;)

Edit: Whopps! Forgot to mention the site itself http://www.webmproject.org/

I was asleep accidentally so I missed the announcement.

Google just changed the web.

Firefox, Opera, Chrome and guess what? Microsoft Internet Explorer 9

Absolutely amazing! They have so many companies behind it that MPEG-LA does not stand a chance in court against that might. AMD ARM Nvidia Microsoft open source groups.
