Uncontacted Indian tribe spotted in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) — One of Brazil's last uncontacted Indian tribes has been spotted in the far western Amazon jungle near the Peruvian border, the National Indian Foundation said Thursday.
The Indians were sighted in an Ethno-Environmental Protected Area along the Envira River in flights over remote Acre state, said the government foundation, known as Funai.
Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and a large planted area. But it was not known to which tribe they belonged, the group said.
"Four distinct isolated peoples exist in this region, whom we have accompanied for 20 years," Funai expert Jose Carlos Meirelles Junior said in a statement.
Funai does not make contact with the Indians and prevents invasions of their land, to ensure total autonomy for the isolated tribes, the foundation said.
Survival International said the Indians are in danger from illegal logging in Peru, which is driving uncontacted tribes over the border and could lead to conflict with the estimated 500 uncontacted Indians now living on the Brazilian side.
There are more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, most of them in Brazil and Peru, the group said in a statement.
"These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist," Survival director Stephen Corry said.
"The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct."

It has occurred to me that this business of creating a "human zoo" in the jungle while the rest of us live, like it or not, in the modern world, is similar to the story in Huxley's Brave New World. Read the last line in the article. "Extinct." Like they're talking about animals, not humans.

That seems almost foreboding. What if human civilization is like these tribes, completely blind of some inconceivably vast civilization?

Wow. Just wow.

indeed. Just hope some intergalactic logging company doesn't want to harvest our system.

Seems kinda cruel to me, to not let them in on the cool stuff the modern world has to offer... for better or for worse. I like the human zoo analogy, should we just let them run around the jungle with bows and arrows or give them machine guns, etc? Surely they should at least be contacted and shown what other humans have acheived and then they can make their own minds up about it.

They don't own the jungle as long as they don't have a paper telling that they own it. That's civilization. Instead of the larger club, you use the faster lawyer.

Well i didn't say anything about what they own and dont... in that sense they're as powerless as the rest of us i guess.

Still, any civilisation that can avoid lawyers is a good thing;)

Don't let some people hear that, they think we are something special because some fantasy novel claims we had been created after all other animals by a omnipotent supernatural being.

No, wait, we've been created AFTER the Elves. Trust me, I've read The Silmarillion a zillion times.
