As we all know, the hardest part of creating a new rocket is naming it, closely followed by creating the vehicle logo:p. So, after asking it's employees and the general public for suggestions, the ULA is taking the top choices from that and letting the internet vote on it's favorite in a poll. Press release here, and the actual poll is here.

The choices are:

Eagle

Freedom

GalaxyOne

Vote for the one you think is best, or the least bad. Just vote damn it.

Edit March 26th: Two new options, as follows:

Vulcan

Zeus

I don't like any of the names, so here's a few of my own:

  • Agon
  • Eos
  • Adonis (I know what you're thinking...)

I don't like any of the names either. GalaxyOne sounds silly and the other choices are too nationalistic for me, particularly Freedom*. However, out of those three I'd choose Eagle because of it shares the name of the Apollo 11 lunar module.

Naming a launch vehicle after something celestial/mythological is the most appropriate option, like Titan, Atlas, Taurus, Saturn, etc. Actually, Falcon 9 isn't bad so Eagle's pretty decent on its own.

*Thinking about it, it means the US will literally launch Freedom into space regularly.

Out of the group, Eagle. Especially if they throw in a reference to the Apollo 11 LM...

IMHO, the names must be:

Delta V

or

Atlas VI...

I'd have gone for Jupiter if LM hadn't stolen it first.

shhhhh... don't say anything but it kinda seems like there are no limits to voting. Here's a funny story:
I used my my "legitimate" vote to vote for Eagle, generally agreeing with folks on here... but then, the pole just stayed there on the screen... and GalaxyOne just seemed so amazing all of a sudden. So I voted for it about a hundred times. :hmm:

Objectively, are ugly names. Ranging from idiot (GalaxyOne) to basely nationalist (Freedom) through obvious and overused (Eagle).
No offense to those who voted for one of these names!

The reason I cast my 120 votes for GalaxyOne were because:

A. Anyone with a space program sized budget that can't make an online poll that only allows one vote deserves to have the cheesiest name win.

B. The company that seriously considers GalaxyOne enough to put it on a three option ballot should be required to use that name as retribution

also, no offense intended here, GalaxyOne is just a laughable option IMHO.

@Pipcard: Somehow, Galaxy I does seem quite a bit better.
My personal reason for disliking GalaxyOne: as you said... LauncherOne, SpaceshipOne, XboxOne
