Looks like i am alone with my Vista then!
Nope, I've got Vista (x64) too. I don't have a load of money to shell out for a supposedly better OS, and my only experience with Win7 is that network diagnostics have been replaced by a BS troubleshooting festival, and that the windows are handled in a confusing way. This OS has been finicky, but I haven't experienced (m)any of the ridiculous problems I've read about online.

Windows 7. It needs tweaking under the hood quite a lot though...

Currently posting this from a Samsung Focus (Windows Phone 7), so I went with Other.

I'll also not be replying to any of the other posts in this thread, to avoid getting this one merged into the OS war thread :P

I'm doing XP for now. I figure I'll switch to something new and different when the bugs get worked out. And more importantly, the rate of change slows down.

I prefer to spend my computing time using something instead of constantly trying to get used to new conventions.

Wait a second... if Martin is using Linux, then how come Orbiter is for Windows? :idk:

Perhaps because he doesn't know the Linux API as well as the Windows API?

Also, even if he is familiar with the Linux API, he might not have been when he started. By this point, from what I've heard, however it got to be programmed that way in the first place, Orbiter now contains quite a bit of not-very-portable code, and even if Martin is quite adept at programming for Linux at this point, porting Orbiter to Linux might basically mean rewriting Orbiter from scratch.

But Orbiter works on Linux, too. Right?

Not without a program that pretends to be Windows. Without that, Linux takes one look at Orbiter and says "Whaaaaaaat? I don't speak Chinese!"

Orbiter on Linux

But Orbiter works on Linux, too. Right?

Orbiter functions rather well on Linux using Wine which can also be run on the Mac platform. The Orbiter base install and latest developement patch at Sourceforge is bulletproof on XP without 3rd party addons. No vistaboost, Orbitersound3.5, etc. You have to include Artlav's Ogla Client as an external renderer. At present you can not complete the majority of scenarios.

The work ahead merely includes submitting bug reports to WineHQ's (Bugzilla) so that Wine supports Orbiter better. This work's efficiency will be twofold since both platforms (Mac & Linux) will benefit. I estimate 20-30 bugreports will have a profound impact on performance. Once the base install has reached a certain point I will turn my attention to the recommended addons listed here at the forum. Some addons work (OrbiterSound without mp3, OMP, etc).

Wine Source code patches done during the base install phase will enable me to write patches for subsequent addons. Wine is written in C. I'm taking a Structured C programming class this summer to be around other programming students and faculty even though I took this course with Pascal (procedural language) years ago. I intend on becomming a super maintainer at Wine's App database at somepoint in the future.

I believe Linux and Mac wi'll be able to participate with OMP (without annoying crashes from the *nix users) a year from now.

Or my name isn't jimblah

I went with Other because i'm on a recent patch of Google's Chromium. I found the source code, put it together, and burned it to a USB drive. i can run it on ANY computer (as long as the hardware is up to par.)

I think it's pretty awesome, and i'll probably get their netbooks that are coming out later this year.
