If Hielor decides to restart the (or a) world with upcoming 1.8, the new update it self brings a lot of features to vanilla that the OF world didn't take us of (e.g. horses atm). So I don't think any kind of mods would be necessary.

ComputerCraft is interesting. Programmable in lua, so you can automate so much.
I don't think mods necessarily make things easy. They give you something to make easy. There's so much more to do than in vanilla. And it's as easy or hard as you like depending on what mods you decide to utilize for yourself.

I think in this case I would agree on this mod. I think my circuit was maybe one of the best redstone automatic machines, between the tree farms and others. Still, it did a few things, and the server is limited to do giant computers like on the previous image.
Maybe because of this, people didnt even try to do that kind of things on the server. Because of this, this mod could let us do new things, not to do things easier. Just by letting people have access to automatic tech

There is this problem more that it is either mods or snapshots/1.8; banners are the one addition that would be the most useful to player on the server. But AFAIK there's no forge version of those snapshots, so locally you can't use mods.
Although Applied Energitics is the one mod I'd like to see added to the server.

Anyway I'll wait for a server reset before heavily getting into the server.

FYI according to the Mojang website and tweets from Searge, it appears 1.8 pre-release will be coming out tomorrow (Aug 22) with only bug fixes to follow.

Then I guess this is that time of year where I remind everyone that the server won't be getting updated until Bukkit has a beta build for 1.8 available...

Not that it really matters anymore since the new launcher lets you go back to an earlier version anyway...

On the topic of Bukkit and mods, apparently something called Cauldron is available that allows simultaneous use of both mods and plugins.

Looks like it mainly just allows you to use a Forge server with Bukkit plugins...

Also, Bukkit declared they were closing today, but then apparently Mojang stepped in and revealed that they've owned Bukkit all along, or something?

http://cauldron.minecraftforge.net/threads/good-bye-bukkit-or-not.382/

Bukkit has decided to close up shop after 3 and a half years of dedicated work on the project. What this means for Cauldron is unknown currently. We will have to wait and see what Spigot does and talk amongst ourselves. Don't worry though, Cauldron shouldn't be going anywhere.

Here is the post from Bukkit if you haven't read it yet.

Edit:

@md_5 tweeted that Spigot would be updating to 1.8. What that entails is to be figured out but it means that there are solutions in the works already. We've discussed a lot of other things in IRC as well. It's sad, but we should be able to come back from it given time.

Edit2:

In a weird turn of events, Mojang has announced that they owned Bukkit all along unbeknownst to anyone involved. They have stepped in and Dinnerbone will be updating Bukkit to 1.8 right away to keep it alive.

I guess we will see what happens from here and hope for the best!

I've been trying to come up with some plans for minecraft money... I finalized the whole banknote concept including the denominations, method of initial distribution, basics... Now I have to figure out the initial price thing based off the rarity of certain items and the cost of finding/extracting these items. Also I need some help making the buy/sell kiosks using redstone so...if anyone wants to help out pm me...

Oh yeah... I came up with some new rule I thought about:
Those who use the server should take lag into consideration and should not overpopulate the initial spawn point.

I'm ranting again. Oh no... I'm filling up pages with nonsense.

Made a breakthrough with the figuring out of the price thing. Apparently I realized that I have to create a new metrics for calculation. So I came up with the rarity quotient which attempts to place a value on non renewable items by determining the odds of stumbling on a block during mining. I also figured out an equation for determining the price ratio of two items based on differing extraction rate. Which would be useful when we get to the iron farm level.

The basic info about the currency:
Name: Dollar
Basic price unit: 256$
Banknotes in supply: 1, 16, 256, 4096

Notes:
The 256$ banknote is the equivalent of the real world $20 bill.
I rejected the ideal of using sub notes like 1/16 or 1/256. There is probably a good percentage of us who aren't accustomed to using binary multiples and may find it difficult to make automated payments using hex fractions. Assuming the economy enters a deflationary period in which there is a need for fractional notes you could just make multiples(ie instead of 0.5$ for 1pork it could be 1$ for 2pork).

Deflation will be expected when the first mega projects are completed. Pretty much the longer the new world is running the easier it will be for new players to acquire resources for building.

New players can acquire currency at a non profit exchange center which will give currency to players who give it wood, cobblestone, meats, sand, etc... Visa-versa. It only exchanges basic materials and it's prices will be set at a no-profit price. It also acts as a economy stabilizer: theoretically preventing players from destabilizing the economy with abnormally high or low prices. The fact that the center only exchanges basics means that the rest of the economy will be left in other peoples hands.

Exchange kiosks will have to be updated and refilled every so often to keep the whole thing running. Or the currency based economy would detach from the real economy.

Infrastructure could be priced or taxed... Arterial railroads could be tolled. So could secure nether junctions. Mega furnaces and iron farms could be taxed to...

I'm going to make a more rambling PDF document about all this garbage when I get the far more advanced stuff.

I will be looking forward on your job fsci123 . Reading your post I have imagined a kind of "goverment" paying to users who wish to build public infrastructures. Roads, Rails on the nether, etc...

Any update on when the server will be updated with the new update?

My economic document is halfway complete... It would've been done a while ago but the dub world has been taking away most of that free time.

Popped in for a look around. Nice place, though I couldn't really do much with no perms. Iffen I could be added, that'd be nice, though no hurry. (Mojang ID: Bersken )

Same time it always gets updated--when a compatible Bukkit version is available. Given the recent Bukkit shakeups, I have no idea how long that will be.

"As the Minecraft Server software is included in CraftBukkit..."

It is? Then why do I need to have the minecraft server downloaded alongside CraftBukkit?

I suspect this won't last long.

Also, from the bukkit forums:
- Wolvereness on IRC has confirmed that he placed this claim. Even though the DMCA says that he is claiming copyright infringement for the project the reality is that he is claiming ownership of the CONTRIBUTIONS he has made to the project. Just to be 100% clear he is claiming that his contributions are still owned by him, even though he directly contributed to the bukkit project. Not that someone else used his copyrighted code and inserted it into the bukkit project. Now he wants those contributions removed from the project because he believes he still owns the right to the code fragments.

Fortunately that is not how the US law works, but his posse is saying that he didn't know that Mojang owned and operated the Bukkit project and that is the basis for his claim. Aka, that he unknowingly contributed to Bukkit, and that Bukkit's relationship with Mojang is the basis for this "unknowing".

Yeah, IANAL, I'm fairly certain that after you contribute to a project, you can't go and say "NOPE YOU CAN'T HAVE IT AFTER ALL"

I didn't know that US law applies for a seemingly transnational internet project. Is this normal or is this as weird as it appears?

This is actually a sticky condition. Generally I would say that you retain copyright on any non-trivial changes. The closest "proof" I have of that is http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/191957/developer-name-in-the-copyright-notice-of-files-contributed-to-open-source-proje.

Most open source projects make sure something like the above can never happen by requiring that, before changes are merged into the project, the contributor must agree to a contributor agreement, ala the Python contributor agreement, or the Android contributor agreement. By signing the agreement, the developer formally gives up copyright on their contributions.

In a quick search, it appears like Bukkit has no such agreement, therefore the claim is valid, as the person retains copyright.

Given the recent Bukkit shakeups...

Wow, you're not kidding. Could get messy? I get the impression Dinnerbone has unexpectedly had a 1.8 Bukkit update thrust upon him. Who knows how long that's going to take, especially with any other related issues (legal?, new API?) going on.
