This add-on contains a MFD called Geostationary MFD. It calculates different parameters for getting to and staying in a geostationary orbit (GEO), although it will also help you into other synchronous orbits around Earth and other heavenly bodies.

For full description and documentation, see the GeostationaryMFD.pdf located in the Doc\Addons\ folder.

Added:


  • Show up to 10 apogee/perigee longitudes into the future on the map.
Fixed:

  • Time to node now counts down to the correct time.
  • GTO dV shows correct ammount of delta v also after apogee raising burn.
Update 27.03.15

Fixed:

  • GTO dV shows now only shows dV needed for raising apogee (previously displayed dV needed for raising apogee and orbit circularization). Tot dV still displays Apogee burn + Inc dV + Circ burn (i.e. total dV needed for the entire flight)

This looks great, lots of information! However, I'm a little unsure how to use it to actually reach a GEO target with this.

First, I would recommend all users to read the documentation before using any add-on.

If it still isn't clear: lets say you want to launch a spacecraft into a geostationary orbit above the same longitude as Cape Canaveral. First, launch into orbit around the Earth.
Target the base by pressing TRG and typing "Cape Canaveral". Wait until the vertical yellow dashed line is above or close to the small square representing the base (or the Curr Ap pos readout is similar to the base longitude which you can find in the Map MFD or in the Orbiter info box, Ctrl+I), and burn the engines until Diff Ap is as close to 0 as you can get.
Cruise to apogee and do necessary correction burns if the apogee drifts. At apogee, circularize the orbit and lower inclination if you already haven't. Try to get Diff T as close to 0 as possible.

You will now be be roughly at the same longitude as Cape Canaveral. If needed, you can perform small manoeuvres over several days to slowly place you at the exact location where you want to be.

The add-on has now been updated.

I have fixed some issues with predicting time to node and GTO [math]\Delta[/math]v.
I have also added a feature which lets you show your perigee or apogee longitude up to the 10 next orbits.

By playing with the "orbit resonance factor" it also makes it very easy to set up an orbit once every 12 hours, every 422 mins or what suits you.

Covered in the PDF file I know but a function I found very useful! Thanks for this
 
It would a lot better if it showed the necessary dV to raise the apoapsis, rather than, or in addition to, the total dV to raise the apoapsis and then circularize.

So I can plan the timing of the GTO burn around the node". As it is I still have to calculate that myself. And the off plane angle I can use with the dV I have to lower the inclination by some amount, depending on excess upper stage fuel.

In fact the labeling is inaccurate, GTO is the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, not the final Geosynchronous orbit. So "GTO dv:" should refer to what I am asking for. I took it to mean that, and found myself in hyperbolic orbit long before I realized the problem..... though I should have recognized the dv as being more than a Trans Lunar Injection LOL I was just plugging numbers without thinking about them.

* by finding out the time to complete half the dv (using dv tools MFD), and starting the burn that long before the node (using that great feature in this MFD)

Thank you for your comment, and sorry for not answering before, but I was away from my Orbiter-computer, so I could not check your questions.

Yes, I have to agree with you, the naming of GTO dV is wrong if it displays the dV needed for both rising the orbit and circularizing. So I agree with you that it would be better if GTO dV only displayed dV needed for rising the apogee (or lowering the perigee if you are in that mode).

I will still display Ap Burn + Inclination burn + Circulation burn in Tot dV, so that the user can see how much fuel is needed for the entire flight.

The addon is now updated!

Small fix, changed GTO dV to only display dV needed to raise apogee to target orbit, not apogee raising + orbit circulation as before.

In trend with several other add-on developers, I here have a version of Geostatinary MFD compatible with the latest Orbiter Beta (rev. 13)
Did you read my mind? Just yesterday I tried if it runs with the latest Orbiter Beta...and thought: hmm I think I have to wait.
