I've had a gander on OH with no luck, has anyone released a container cargo ship?

I was just thinking we need ships around WIN Ultra, with camera locations on them no less :D

We can use XR2s for maritime search and rescue too, as seen on OMP :D

Why not use UCGO? I've taken a couple of ship meshes from the Ariane 6 pack and made them UCGO compatible 'cars'. It allows me to do some cool things like SRB retrieval and crew rescue as well as some other things:

Oh cool, Loru. And yeah, I'd take the advice given and go with UCGO functionality.

I was thinking, and still am, of including a static ship mesh at the port all the time anyway. But I thought a usable one would be nice. Especially if it can actually be loaded with UCGO containers.. although however many thousands they carry might be a bit OTT.

Could they be given an XR5's payload system instead? XR5 containers are of a more practical size and I can make a few dozen more container types easily.

Well, lets be hypothetical because I am currently 20,000 miles below the surface of an ocean of SSU work, if I would start a custom DLL for ships, I would aim at the following features or frameworks around the generic DLL, so it makes sense:


  • Very important, have a generic module for containers. Making each container a vessel would become ineffective for such a large ship, we are speaking of over ten thousand TEU containers on the biggest ones. Only create separate container vessels if needed.
  • Have support for the typical lighting on ships.
  • Have a physics model that is optimized for fairly slow travel and works at great time warp factors.
  • Support other kinds of cargo to be managed, eg vehicles, liquids or bulk cargo
  • Support engine exhaust streams.
Additionally, such features would be fun:

  • Support for animated cranes.
  • Support for animated cargo hold hatches
  • Support for animated radar antennas
  • VC support for the bridge
  • Low res depth maps for the planets, with support for detail maps for ports
  • Carrier operations - land and launch vessels.
  • Space tracking ships.
But I am not making this, it is just my fantasy.

I'm no programmer or 3D artist which is why I took the static meshes from the Arianne 6 pack to make them into UCGO Cars. Woo482 very kindly provided a harbour mesh and it's been working well for me.

I've used Universal Cargo Deck to add various payloads (DG's, Heliocopters for SAR ops) and so on.

Yeah it doesn't have to be as huge as a superfreighter, something that carries 4-12 XR5 containers on a Universal Deck would be great. Be sure to have a pier to dump stuff off of course and we can play Virtual Sailor on OMP :D

Was aiming at the same stuff, should be later installed in a ship together with the ARCM (Annular Ramjet Cruise Missile). But I wanted to make ship that looks like a bigger Sea Shadow.

Container Ship is 228.1 m long and 60 m wide and can contain 1500 standard TEU containers.

That's nice:thumbup:. I have always wanted some ships to park near Ascension Island base. All those rocket stages have to get to island somehow.

And I'm pretty sure that this ship will receive some "aftermarket upgrades:lol:" when it gets in my hands.

Of course I plan. The problem is that you would need to wait until I have also done some design stuff for it.

What is more or less fixed now is the armament, coarse shape and length of the ship, but not all details, like some of the launchers should operate (eg, how to deflect the booster engine exhaust of the cruise missile launcher).

Also, I want to have a few VC meshes for it, which are also currently just a few handwritten notes in my ideas book. Eg, I want Bridge, CIC, Flight Control (helicopter deck), Engineering Station and ARCM handling room as VC locations.

Looks like I'll again use the Superbowl night (TV starts on 23:35 here) for some productivity. I'll move the details into a new thread.
