Here's a choice of 3 different scenarios. All three start out the same with an eject that goes inward to Venus to sling to Mars. Then the difference in the 3 is:
1. A landing on Mars that has about a month on the surface then an easy eject to a soft encounter at Earth for total mission time of about 20 months, Pe vel= 11.7 km/sec..
2. Abort the Mars landing in the first scenario. Sling Mars to return to Earth for fairly fast encounter speed. Total mission time= 16 months. Encounter Pe vel= 16.5 km/sec.
3. Abort the Mars landing in the first scenario. Sling Mars to Earth for a later but softer encounter speed. Total Mission time= 22.5 months, Pe vel= 13.7 km/sec.
The idea would be to evaluate system performance and decide in the last few days before arriving at Mars if a landing is possible or if one needs to skip the landing and with a MCC to sling back to Earth. Then if the sling to Earth is decided, one has the choice of a rapid return but fast Pe velocity at Earth, or a longer return time with a slower Pe velocity at Earth.
