Why use a turboprop instead of a turbofan? The answer may be obvious but I know very little about aeroplane design so go easy on me.

Wikipedia tells me this is intended to replace C-130 and C-160 but it has a lot more payload capacity than either of those two. It sure looks like a pretty powerful machine.

Maybe kev33 can make one, he is the most skilled in making planes.

Why use a turboprop instead of a turbofan? The answer may be obvious but I know very little about aeroplane design so go easy on me.

The reason is pretty simple - it was meant to have very short take-off runs, even from bad runways. The technology for achieving this with turbofans can be seen in the C-17 - it is pretty complicated and expensive.

With a turboprop, the propellers blow accelerated air over the whole wing, increasing lift.

Also, a turboprop has a better fuel economy at low speeds and altitudes, allowing it to stay longer over a region, or have a longer range when flying close to the ground.
