Hi all!
I wanted to try something different today, so I launched Orbiter, opened Scenario Editor and put a Delta-Glider IV on Cape Run.33 with a MK satellite. My objective was: deploy the satellite on LEO, power it up and return to Cape.
First I launched PRO904SPEC40 AP (lame, yes, but I wasn't in the mood for manual). It left me on a 240Km (or something like that) altitude orbit.
So I aligned my DG with the artificial horizon, opened the cargo bay, nose cone and outer door (it took me some time to see that I needed to empty the airlock "
, why can't I open this ?!"). Undocked the satellite and launched my only UMmu passenger. I need to practice EVA more, since I had to go THROUGH my ship AND the satellite to grapple it. Power up wasn't a problem, but my UMmu missed the nose cone several times trying to get aboard .
Now, reentry was a pain .My ship got burned many times (no, I refuse to use AP!!!), the nose kept getting down
. Luckly someone posted on this forum saying to use control surfaces, and I was finally able to reenter (holy
, I had to keep an eye on three things at the same time: vertical speed, that I tryied to keep it at -75m/s, pinch and temperature. Also, my passenger passed out twice because of excess Gs). The DG was steady at 40Km altitude and I was happy
.
Now, what could I do next? Landing, of course. My ship had like 15% of main fuel and 90% of RCS but Cape was almost 3.500Km south! I fired my main engines at 30% and keeping my altitude at 40Km (for speed). Took some time, but I finally reached it with almost no main fuel (didn't do any transfer, so I still had my RCS almost full), but my DG was too high and fast, and I overshoot Cape .
The descending was almost like a reentry because I wanted to get down fast (DG got burned two times), my passenger passed out three times and I received two "High G" warnings. I was at the aproximation phase, at least. Vertical speed ok, horizontal speed ok, runway aligned, gear down, fail, where's it?! While I was trying to figure why the hell my gears weren't moving, the ship crashed. Later I found out that hydraulics was disabled (I think it was the AP, I'll never use it again!). I tryied again and landed safely on the runway
.
I love happy endings :beach:.
For my next mission: the MK's antenna broke, so it's basically a dead piece of metal. Retrieve it for repairs!
