General Question Freezing / slow framerate when landing = CRASH LAND

Ok, I have installed it by unzipping the files and placeing them into the corrct files etc in the orbiter folder. When I open up OrbiterNG (which io dont normally use btw) i saw the D3D9 option in the moduals and selected it. I then lauchned a delta glider scenario but nothing would load and a message come up saying "orbiter.exe has stopped working - Windows can check online for a solution to the problem" Youve probably seen this screen and know what im on about but I then have a couple of options. It also has a drop down at the bottom to "view the problem details". I have listed this below in case you need this:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: orbiter.exe
Application Version: 0.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 4c7b0fbb
Fault Module Name: D3D9Client.dll
Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
Fault Module Timestamp: 4dea76d5
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0001e672
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057

What am I doing wrong?>

Many thanks

FYI, i i know the DGIV is different from the standard model DG and I have also tried different scenarios like atlantis etc etc

Would you please post here the content of the Orbiter.log file after that crash? It is in the orbiter root directory.

Not sure how to get this info but is this it?

I'm afraid it says that your videocard, well, sucks.:tiphat: I'll ask jarmonik to comment though.

You should run orbiter_ng.exe instead of orbiter.exe

i think i am running obiter ng?

---------- Post added at 02:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:39 PM ----------

is this the reason it keeps freezing? and why would it run ok most of the time and freezxe everynow and then in the video card is rubbish?

Also it a brand new £800 laptop. surely the video card cant suck that much? worse than my 5 year old £200 dell piece of rubbish which orbiter ran perfectly on?

I think, I had the same problem, my netbook's graphics card is not compatible with my DirectX version or something like that. Read the posts on the D3D9 thread. ;) What's your graphics card?

Maybe your videocard is too modern for DirectX9? Not fully supporting it or something like that? What's your laptop exactly? I mean its model.

Just check my receipt and it seems I slightly exaggerated the price but still should be ok for £550?. Anyways its Toshiba L650-1FW.

When you are running the D3D9Client, uncheck the "Enable 4x MultiSampling" from the Video Tab. It's possible that your hardware doesn't support that. I will add automated check in the next version of the client.

Ok i got it working, thanks for that/......but is the screen supposed to be this small? anyways of making it bigger?

ignore me, im an idiot! figured that out.

let me see if this stops the sudden frame rate drops..

I'll post later regaridng it.

Thanks

I affraid to say that I am still getting the sudden drops in Frame rate. it could actually be worse when running it in Orbiter NG as they appear to be slightly more frequent.

Did you find anything interestng out about my graphic card when i said the laptop make and model?

Any further suggestions very welcome.

Thanks

forgot to mention (althoughi dont know if its important) that the average framerate was higher when running it in Orbiter NG although the sudden drops were still there.

Well, your laptop have integrated graphics adapter, and I'm not a fan of integrated graphics, maybe because I've met too many problems with it in my professional experience, and, hell, my netbook runs Plants vs. Zombies with nightmare glitches, not to mention Orbiter.
If D3D9 doesn't helping you then your problem is obviously not in the Windows7/Orbiter graphics engine incompatibility. So if all other Martin's suggestions are missed out then we're out of options. I vote for integrated graphics adapter issue.

Just so I understand, my only option is to buy a new computer??

Nothing else possible?>

Thanks

---------- Post added at 01:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:01 PM ----------

what do you do now then? do you just put up withn the freezes?

I'm happy with the inline-client of Orbiter.
As my netbook is very good for games and that, that's no problem. I have never freezings and a nice framerate with 40-80fps and thats good enough.
I have Windows XP here, with Windows 7, I know from a friend, it's not so good...
When it is not working, I wouldn't buy a new PC only for that. When you would play very much with other games, simulators etc., you could buy a new PC.

You could try to install Windows XP, maybe even 32-bit one. You could try to disable Aero and gadgets in your Windows 7, disable all the programs that are autostarting together with Windows (some sellers are often providing new computers with preinstalled OS with loads of useless soft autostarting). You could check other graphics-heavy applications for any freezes or glitches of any kind.
But if you have lots of a spare money, why not to buy a new computer or two?:) Just try to chose one with 'gaming videocard' like nVidia or Radeon or something. Not some Intel Graphics Accelerator.

In fact, you could try one more thing. Launch Orbiter in windowed mode, open task manager and wait for freezing. When it's occured check Task Manager for overall CPU usage and the process with the most CPU usage (if you click on the third tab the list will be sorted in real time by CPU usage, and the most CPU-consuming process will be displayed at the top of the list). Remember we're interested in what's happening only while freezing takes place. You could make a screenshot with PrintScreen key and post it here.
