Wohnrad (lit. "Living Wheel" in German)— a geostationary space station concept proposed in 1928 by Slovenian 🇸🇮 engineer and visionary Herman Potočnik, also known under his pen name Hermann Noordung in his only book: Das Problem der Befahrung des Weltraums – der Raketen-Motor (The Problem of Space Travel – The Rocket Motor) published in Austria. Potočnik’s design is pioneering, as the first space station capable of generating artificial gravity through the use of centrifugal force. Thus, it predated von Braun’s more recognizable toroidal space station by 24 years, and the well known Stanford torus — by 47 years!

In the first depiction of the Earth from the geostationary orbit ever drawn, which we can see above, Potočnik included his space station together with a solar power plant and an astronomical observatory. The three objects were intended by Potočnik to serve as an orbital complex.
