*sighs* We could almost start a gunfire contest : :(

2 persons have been shot to death this Thursday in a gunfire in Istres, southern France. A third one was severly wounded and died in the hospital. Another is wounded but alive.

At this point, it seems that the shooter was a 20 years old guy, armed with a riotgun. Impacts have notably been found on cars.

Anybody interested in doing a live-fire reenactment of the Battle of Ypres?

So... This is pretty rare in western europe, isn't it? I was under the impression guns aren't frequently used in crimes there, partly for social-historical reasons, and partly for penalties available for administration

That is correct, but we still have quite many guns here, legal and illegal. It is only easier to tell the illegal guns from the legal ones.

Not that much in Marseille (mafia / drug traffic hub) and Corsica (independentists)...

Well, there was a brief burst between 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, but generally we are well behaved...:)

EDIT:
Should point out that the UK is not immune to this:

and not far from my parents place:

There hasn't been a gun culture of much in the UK, it was farmers, the Aristos, and some enthusiasts.

Changed a bit of course with the drugs in the last 20 years, but still mostly confined to the cities.

I wonder if it's a media effect.
Like, there are 1000 cases of child rape a year, then one particularly bad case gets publicity, public outcry follow, many more cases gets published, making an impression of a crime wave, laws get passed against paedophiles, all the s-storm, and so on.
Eventually everything calms down, next few year's statistics come in - still a 1000 cases of child rape a year.

The shooter was arrested. The weapon was not a riotgun, but a "neutralized" AK-47. He bought the weapon online, then put it back to operational state. Seems he was known from the police, he already had problems in the past. He was living in a poor suburb, neighbours said everyone knew he had illegal weapons, and charge the police for doing nothing.

"Neutralized"? AFAIK when a weapon is "neutralized" its barrel is plugged and the firing mechanism removed or welded. I'd be curious to see where he got it...

Replacement barrel. Which should be tightly regulated, but strangely very often somebody got such a spare part delivered like he ordered a book.

Ehhh, not my problem, maybe Solarliners :hide:

But if the French are defending, then you must know that

Ils ne passeront pas!

You know the answer in 1939... "Wir Sprechen Kein Franzmännisch"

Can you translate that last word for me? My knowledge of German is limited to saying the thing when someone sneezes and pasting your quote into a web translator...

Is actually no real German word, my grandfather had often the term "Franzmann" for a Frenchman in his lingo.

Aha

"We do not speak French"

From what I was reading, there may be a connection between that saying & Tolkien writing the scene with Gandalf & the Balrog.

You know, if you're telling someone, matter-of-factly, that they shall not pass, maybe it's good to have a good resume to back it up. Being a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor, would help.

or simply luring them onto a really unstable bridge might work.
