I lived in Merritt Island since 2001 and moved to Tampa in 2009. I've seen every single launch in person in that time frame, plus a few more in the past 2.5 years here in Tampa, and trips back.
No, much too far away. I've seen the Cape once (alligators! they have alligators!!) and that's likely as close as I'll get to seeing any launch. Lucky you, Star Voyager! That must have been really cool. :speakcool:
Yes,I live 45min from Cape Canaveral, and have seen 4 Shuttle launches From Titusville. I consider myself very luck to see these magestic machines Perform.:tiphat:
Yes.
I've seen STS-114, STS-124, STS-128 from a distance of 12 miles. I saw STS-135 from a distance of 7 miles which was the best shuttle launch experience I've ever had.
I've seen STS-121, 115, 116, 117, 123, 126, 119, 127, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133 all from Tampa. The view isn't as impressive. 118, 120, 125, and 134 where all obscured by clouds.
Also, I heard the sonic booms from STS-123, 119, and 134.
I hope I'll hear them from STS-135 in a few hours.
Saw 133 from the KSC causeway. A great show, and lucky to be able to get such a great view of the final lift off of Discovery, my personal favorite of the orbiters.
I've come as close as I could to a shuttle launch. Watching it live on NTV, then running outside 20 mins after launch to watch the orbiter and ET go over the UK about a quarter of a degree apart! Range: Probably about 100-200km or so
When I was very little my family went to Disney World in Orlando. There was shuttle launch sheduled that week, but it got postponed. I was also very very sick with some kind of virus (we think it was Rotavirus).
I almost got to see a sounding rocket launch when I was 10. My family was staying on Chincoteague Island, and my father and I visited Wallops. The next morning, a launch was scheduled. Unfortunately, it was postponed.
STS-61-A (Challenger): From Orlando. Watched it clear the tower on TV, then walked outside to watch the rest. At that distance (about 50 miles), I could see the SRB flames. It was her final successful flight.
I feel really bad that a lot of you weren't able to see these incredible machines in person like I was blessed to see. To those who haven't seen one in person, I wish I could be able to share the experience with you.. as I've been through it as recently as two weeks ago.
The closest thing I ever saw to a Shuttle launch was a rocket launch from the cape. All I remember was that it was in 1990 and I was on board a jet flying me to Florida with my father and sister for vacation. The pilot radioed out to the cabin that those of us on the left side of the plane would be able to see a rocket going up from the cape. It was night time, so all I saw was black... and this tiny little red light going straight up until it was out of sight.
Apparently it also went off course or something because we read in the paper the next day that they had blown it up. I'd love to know what they were trying to put up.
