That's one of the interesting, though sometimes irritating, things about the Enhanced Fujita scale, that no matter how strong the winds, the final rating depends on the actual damage done. Meaning a storm that was F-5 on the Fujuta scale, could theoretically be rated as an EF-0 on the new scale if it didn't hit anything that would show much damage.

Yes. That is also why we need to use the TORRO scale in Europe - different damage pattern. An EF-3 would in the USA devastate a town, in Europe you could think you only need to clean up and fix the roof (But it could still cause structural damage here, that you can't see at a first glance)
 
BREAKING: The OKC May 31st tornado has been upgraded to an EF-5 and had a maximum width of an insane 2.6 miles, making it the largest tornado ever recorded. Upgrade was based on a DOW wind reading of 296mph.

Thats 4,150 m in SI units... :blink: That must have been like a small scale hurricane rather than a normal funnel cloud, since only few tornados have ever been higher than 800 meters from ground to cloud base.

Well, think of the geometry. The maximum height of a tornado is pretty limited by the cloud base. Most tornados you see, are narrow funnels, much less wide than high. Some are as wide as high.

And this one was possibly four times wider than high. A tornado wall.

Ahh, yes, I understand now.
Video of the Moore tornado really did look like a wall of darkness as well.
 
Yeah...Look at this video, it almost looked like the whole wall cloud was about the touch the ground.


The Tornado was also partially hidden in rain for some time, it is really easy to be surprised by such a large storm, especially when the rain makes it hard to see it.
 
I thought someone already posted this but I'm not seeing it.
The sudden change in direction is obvious and huge.

Yes, the storm seems to have started out as right-mover and then, when having gained intensity quickly, started to move in the normal direction of a Tornado.
 
They've got a special on the Moore tornado on Discovery Channel, and in memory of the Storm Chasers guys.

It's still incredible that no one died at Briarwood Elementary in particular.

I think both are the same, especially the final seconds of the video look very similar to the helicopter perspective.

There wasn't any helicopter coverage of the El Reno one though.
