Launch and docking of Soyuz TMA-12M, March 25-26, 2014

Hey! It's late March! It's the time of cherry blossoms!

.........

.........ah but I wasn't going to talk about this. I actually want to talk about the next new crew of the ISS, who is starting their deployment to space later today when their Soyuz spacecraft launches and docks from desert to station in just 6 hours. So here we go then...... :tiphat:

(details coming soon.....) :tiphat:

It's the time for a new crew of the ISS again! Like many of the recent expeditions to the ISS, the team of three departing to the ISS consists of one veteran Russian cosmonaut, one veteran American astronaut and a rookie cosmonaut.

On the NASA side is Steven Swanson, who was an engineer before he joined the astronaut crew in 1998, and has flown two Space Shuttle missions that delivers two of the four power-generating ISS truss segments - STS-117 (June 2007) and STS-119 (March 2009). On the Roscosmos side is Aleksandr Skvortsov - an ex-air force pilot who already has one long-term ISS expedition experience in 2010; and Oleg Artemyev, another cosmonaut selected in the 2003 group that is waiting for his first chance to fly.

The docking of Soyuz TMA-12M has been delayed due to a problem with the DV-3 rendezvous burn. The profile is now a standard 2-day rendezvous profile as flown in the past before the "Rapid Rendezvous Profile" was introduced.

---------- Post added at 02:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:28 AM ----------

The docking is now planned for 7:48 pm EDT Thursday. The DV-3 burn was not performed due to some kind of attitude error that caused the Soyuz flight computer to abort the rendezvous program.
And due to critical nature of the DV burns, a Rapid Rendezvous Profile is not possible if any of them is not performed.

More data will be downlinked once the Soyuz passes over the Russian ground stations again.

Damn, I slept over for the entire process! (first launch I missed since last August!) Must have brought all the bad luck to the Soyuz crew...... :beathead:

Anyway it seems that the attitude problem is software related, so it should be easier to fix than, say thruster failure.......

And.....the launch as seen from the ISS!

They left the time acceleration on for too long and missed the burn. Happens all the time.

Expedition 39/40 Trio’s Arrival at Space Station Delayed

March 25, 2014

The next trio of crew members destined for the International Space Station is now looking forward to a Thursday arrival at the orbiting laboratory after their Soyuz spacecraft was unable to complete its third thruster burn to fine-tune its approach.

Soyuz Commander Alexander Skvortsov and Flight Engineers Oleg Artemyev of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and Steve Swanson of NASA are in good spirits aboard the Soyuz TMA-12M spacecraft, and their colleagues already aboard the station were informed of the new plan. Expedition 39 Commander Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Flight Engineers Rick Mastracchio of NASA and Mikhail Tyurin of Roscosmos were expecting their new crewmates to dock at 11:05 p.m. EDT Tuesday night, but now will need to wait a little longer.

Flight controllers in the Mission Control Center outside Moscow are now reverting to a backup 34-orbit rendezvous, which would result in an arrival and docking at 7:58 p.m. Thursday, March 27. Rendezvous experts are reviewing the plan, and may update it later as necessary. Docking will be at the station’s Poisk docking module.

This longer rendezvous and docking pattern was the standard rendezvous profile until last year; this would have been the fifth rendezvous using the accelerated timeline. The last two-day rendezvous was Expedition 34, which launched on Dec. 19, 2012, and docked to the station on Dec. 21, 2012. That Soyuz crew included NASA’s Tom Marshburn, the Canadian Space Agency’s Chris Hadfield and Roscosmos’ Roman Romanenko. The first same-day rendezvous and docking was Expedition 35, which launched on March 28, 2013, and docked to the station March 29. That crew included NASA’s Chris Cassidy and Roscosmos’ Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin.

Flight controllers in Moscow are reviewing data to determine the reason the third thruster burn did not occur. In conversations between flight controllers in Moscow and Houston, initial information indicates the problem may have been the spacecraft was not in the proper attitude, or orientation, for the burn.

Swanson, Skvortsov and Artemyev are scheduled to return home in September as Expedition 40 crew members. They will officially become Expedition 40 when Expedition 39 crew members Wakata, Mastracchio and Tyurin end their mission and undock in their Soyuz TMA-11M spacecraft in May for their return to Earth.

1° attitude error, lol... That's the kind of things that doesn't worry me too much in Orbiter, even with realistic spacecrafts

...The first two rocket firings went smoothly, but the spacecraft was slightly out of attitude, or orientation, for the third "burn" and the rendezvous procedure was aborted.

During subsequent passes over Russian ground stations, engineers downlinked stored data from the spacecraft to figure out what caused the 1-degree attitude error. They have not yet revealed the presumed root cause, but NASA officials say the problem is understood and engineers have developed procedures to make sure it isn't repeated on future flights.

You just can't take chances when dealing with something as delicate as a real-life manned orbital rendezvous.

I'll tell you what, though. The old 34-orbit rendezvous seems so long after getting used to the expedited 4-orbit profile. But it's good to see them on board nonetheless.

Soyuz TMA-11M landing May 13/4, 2014

It's the time for change of guard on the ISS again! The Expedition 38/9 crew, flying since last November, has completed their job there and will leave for Earth in a few hours time:

Hatch closure is planned in 5.5 hours from now at around 19:15 UTC, undocking is planned at 22:36 UTC and the Soyuz spacecraft will make its de-orbit burn at 01:04 UTC for a landing at 01:58 UTC on the grass lands of Kazakhstan. :tiphat:

After that I'll report on the next crew of the ISS - a funny bunch I must say - as well as the next 2 launches on Thursday. :hello:
