Problem Mesh texture not showing on a base object

I have made a very simple mesh in Wings3d ( block 10 by 20 by 30) and put textures side1, side2, top & bottom.
Cut and produced a UVmap and then exported it, added texture and imported it back. So far so good.

In wings3d I can see the "painted sides and top. Export using the addon as an orbiter mesh. Loaded into Meshwizard along with a bitmap of the UVmap and it "seems" fine. The mesh wire frame is viewable and the BMP lines up with the UVmap.

DDS file to textures and BLOCK.msh to meshes folders. Add to base using OBM without complaining.

Run Orbiter and all I get is a shiney metal like box.

Its not a great mesh I know but I seem to be falling at the first hurdle. all of the details can be found on a web page I made so as not to clutter up this forum.

OWNMATERIAL keyword in the MESH entry is the line you are looking for. If it isn't present put it there (another way would be to use Base.cfg to add texture name there and use TEX parameter of the MESH instead).

I have tried "ownmaterial" ticked and not ticked and have selected the Block.dds file but it makes no difference!!! Thanks for the help still.

What you posted is the code of the mesh file, which I've already seen in the link you provided. Post the contents of the $Orbiterroot\Config\(PlanetWhereTheBaseIs)\Base\(NameOfTheBaseThatHasThisMesh).cfg file.

I don't have OBM that's why I'm asking you to post that file.

I understand I can add my own textures to an Orbiter hanger/block and get much the same effect. I just wanted it so anyone downloading the base ( should I ever get that far!!) would not have to cut and paste textures to the base config file.
Just wanted to play with the big boys......

The way you posted it means that you must edit the $Orbiterroot\Config\Base.cfg file and place the line "Block" (without the quotes) somewhere between the BEGIN_TEXTURES - END_TEXTURES lines.

Anywhere will do as long as it is between those two lines that already exist in the base.cfg file

Before you do that, try this:

MESH
FILE Block
OWNMATERIAL
POS 1924 5 -201
SCALE 1 1 1
ROT 0
SHADOW
PRELOAD
END

If neither of these works, it means that your mesh has not been mapped properly.

Tried it... fail

The mesh looks ok in wings3d but I dont seem to be able to find a mesh simple enough to compare it with. All you clever folk want to do stuff like that very fine refueling station I "loaned" from wideawake ....

Zip the dds file and attach it on a post, so I can see how the texture is mapped.

EDIT: Scratch that, I will see how it's mapped when I open it in meshwizard.

EDIT2: Meshwizard shows that the texture has been mapped on the mesh correctly.
As orb posted above, what DTX format did you use to save the texture?

I don't know exactly how the DTX format works in DDS files, but I usually save my textures in DTX3 and the meshes load with no problem. Give it a try.

So, can you upload the (zipped) texture into a post for us to do checks why it doesn't show up? We already have the mesh and configuration of base you posted earlier.

I couldn't reproduce your issue.

With using the mesh entry you posted there for the base:
Think the lines of most interest are:-

just before the END_TEXTURES line in Config/Base.cfg, and the mesh was properly textured.

Next I removed that line from Config/Base.cfg and replaced this in the mesh entry in the surface base configuration file:

I on the other hand, did reproduce it. Could this be a graphics card glitch?

paddy2's texture did not load when I did exactly the same.

First of all the texture uploaded doesn't look like the one in the pic on post #1 . Here is how it looks like when opened in Photoshop:

Did you use the DxTex util to make it like that? :shrug:

I opened a default Orbiter texture that I know it works (concrete.dds), resized to match and placed the texture on top of it. Saved the file as block.dds in DTX3 format and placed it in the textures directory.

I added the mesh on one of my bases and loaded a scenario.

It's always worth testing the very obvious, so forgive me if your response to this is "well obviously I checked that whap!"....

Is the texture called block.dds or Block.dds? Note the capitalisation. I'm pretty sure orbiter is case sensitive in this regard, so the mesh file is looking for block.dds, but if the texture is called Block.dds then it won't find what it's looking for...

Perhaps?

The texture indeed has transparent holes when checked with GIMP.

But this is how it looks like for me in Orbiter (without making any changes):

(BTW, it was in Linux, so it should be even more case sensitive than in Windows. :p)

I tryed different solutions and i don't see your texture except if i load it in dxtbmp and save it as dxt1 ( alpha ), dxt3 or dxt5 ( in all cases with mipmap but i don't think that it's pertinent here ).
