howdy,

first timer here!

just downloaded and installed orbiter and i am stunned by how deep and truly educational it is! and that educational factor works out perfectly for me because i sought orbiter out to get a handle on the phsyics stuff that came up during a really thrilling part in the neal stephenson science fiction novel, anathem.

the book is about 900 pages and it is really really fantastic - finished it today. it plays out as mix of "a canticle for liebowitz" and "2001 a space odyssey" (the movie) plus add a little bit of "rendezvous with rama"... (and throw in some kung fu monks for good measure).

the part involving space sequence starts at page 739 for people who just want to see some hot newtonian action.

found out some weird factoids about how increasing speed increases altitude if you're aimed down path of orbit, the perils of eccentricity, etc...

anyhoo, got me really interested in ORBITAL MECHANICS and so i did a google search "orbital mechanics + simulator" and i got pointed right to orbiter!

anyway, just wanted to share a book that serves as a great "advertisement" for orbiter and a cool thing to check out to see a really exciting space scenario - actually, the stuff would make really cool missions in orbiter!

anyway, looking forward to really getting into it and am learning stuff already through the "have fun is space" book. got periapsis and apoapsis and "where you start a burn is a part of your new orbit".... : )

Check the author again, it's probably Martin Schweiger's name backwards :O

Welcome to Orbiter m8 ;)
Download the orbiter manual Go Play in Space if you want somewhere to get started!

:welcome: to the forum!

For a really good tutorial, google "orbital operations". First hit is not so playfull as GPiS and features graphics that make the stuff very easy to comprehend. But I guess you already know most of it from the book :P
If your rig can handle it, don't miss out on Seth's earth and mars textures.

Happy Orbiting

It's a great book in many aspects. As I'm very interested in both mathematics and spaceflight, it was especially interesting to me since I could easily understand most of the scientific propositions in it. I agree the spaceflight part was very interesting, and would make a great orbiter addon (hint, hint).

Hear Hear!

I hadn't used Orbiter for a while and Anathem has brought me back.

Love Neal's work
