Hi everyone, hope you guys are having a great day.

I just needed help with starting orbiter, i downloaded both 2016/2024 from different websites, but i'm just not able to get either one to run at all.

I've extracted them but whenever i run any scenario on either the starting page loads and then just quits and goes back to the home page.

I've uploaded a video on reddit if anyone wants to see
As suggested by people there, i tried installing D3d9 client, extracted it to my orbiter folder replacing the existing files still it didn't work. I'm not able to change my graphics engine to anything but "Built-in Graphics engine".

Also i'm new to the forum and orbiter in general so apologies in advance if i'm making a stupid mistake

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Let's focus on Orbiter 2024 since that's the most recent release, and also includes the Directx9 client by default. Can you:

 • unpack the orbiter 2024 release into a new folder so you have a fresh clean copy of it
 • run orbiter_ng.exe from that folder
 • make sure that the d3d9 client module is enabled in the module list
 • try to run one of the base scenarios - which one doesn't matter, but run the same one every time you try to troubleshoot this
 • observe what happens. if the simulator crashes back out to desktop, then post the contents of the "orbiter.log" file into a post in this thread (surrounded by

tags so it doesn't make a stupidly long post). if it doesn't crash, hurray!

Don't worry, there are no stupid mistakes, just happy little accidents.

I've noticed in your video that you've started orbiter.exe, not orbiter_ng.exe.
I don't even know if orbiter.exe still works in the 2024 Versions.
So make sure you test with orbiter_ng.exe
This confusion is very unfortunate.
So try Xyon's steps, they should get you goin'

I would also recommend to install the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from Microsoft
Note that these should be installed regardless of what DirextX version your System has - the 2010 Runtimes are mandatory.

For me it works. But my Franken-Notebook is special. DX9 is still better by all metrics, unless dire reasons apply, you should use orbiter_ng and DirextX9.
