When I try to start Orbiter 2016 Beta, it gets to the loading screen where it says Beta with the Earth behind it but then it completely crashes out of Orbiter entirely and goes back to the desktop. Does anyone know what the problem could possibly be?

Hi!
Can you post the log?

How can I find the log? I'm new to this entire thing and I'm not really sure what I'm doing.

Welcome jackswigert1970 !

The log is in your "root folder", that is the folder you created to put Orbiter in.

It's called (not surprisingly) "Orbiter.log"

It's normally close to the "orbiter.exe" file in the list.

Wrapping it in 'code' or 'php' tags will make it easier to read

Maybe you better not try running the Beta version right now. Can you run the original vanilla Orbiter ?

Kind of. Some of it works but some doesn't. I'm trying to play NASSP but only the Apollo 7 mission works. I was told that I had to install Orbiter Beta for NASSP to be able to run properly.

There's probably alot more to it than that.

Oh, and Welcome to Orbiter BTW.

...as GLS stated, a read-only folder is very unlikely.
I suspect it to be an UAC issue.

@jackswigert1970: Could you please post us the path you've installed Orbiter in?
If it's at "C:\Program Files" or "c:\Program Files (x86)" you might run into some issues.
You could remove any restrictions on that (sub-)folder by right-clicking on that Orbiter folder and grant full-access to it under the Security tab...
Or just move it to another location.

Ah and you could also double-check the instructions of the documentation (at {ORBITER_ROOT}\Doc\Orbiter.pdf) Chapter 3.3 Installation

Thanks for your help guys. I don't understand any of what you're saying. I know nothing about the folder stuff. I'll probably just give it up unless someone actually can tell me exactly what to do. Thanks

@jackswigert1970: I interpret your first post that you have been able to start Orbiter (the Launchpad dialog) and did startup a scenario ("welcome" scenario?!), right?

In that case, a file called "Orbiter.log" must have been created! It's located (on your hard-drive) at the same place the Orbiter.exe is located you ran.

BTW: Don't give up so early! There will be plenty of times something doesn't go right the first time ...it's (kind of) rocket science... :p

No I don't have an Orbiter.log file anywhere that I can see.

Do you have show file extensions enabled in Windows Explorer? You can do this by clicking on View and then checking the box for File extensions.

000000.000: Module EarthAtmJ71G.dll ...... [Build 190914, API 190914]
000000.000: VSOP87(B) Earth: Precision 1.0e-08, Terms 2564/2564

It stopped when loading Earth, so I'd say it's a Earth.cfg issue or an surface tile issue.
Also, Orbiter Beta should be installed over an Orbiter 2016 installation, as some files are not in the repository.

Yes I saw that.
Not sure what you mean by installed over an Orbiter installation.

I made a new folder for the beta and installed it from there.
