This was taken approximately one second before impact. Investigation showed that a failed onboard computer caused a loss of flight control. The pilot panicked, attempted to regain control of the space craft manually, and ultimately flew the vessel into the Martian soil very near the Prelude-II base he had departed from. All four crew members onboard were killed instantly. The ejection system failed to remove the crew from the cabin quickly enough, and a report shows that even if it had, the negative vertical speed would have killed any crew as well.
The moral of the story is: Don't turn off your APU in flight!
