Can anybody help?

My laptop is ancient and runs Orbiter fine (but slow). My PC is a homebuilt hi spec and for some reason Orbiter won't start.

I click on the icon and get an error box that says:

"Enumeration failed. Your system may be in an unstable state and need to be rebooted. ORBITER will now exit."

Then another box:

"Application creation failed. Terminating"

The Orbiter log says:

"**** Orbiter.log
Build Sep 29 2006 [v.060929]
Can't query IDirect3D7 during enumeration!
Can't query IDirect3D7 during enumeration!
Can't query IDirect3D7 during enumeration!
No devices and/or modes were enumerated!
Application creation failed

My PC runs with 2x 23" widescreen monitors, both run at 2048x1152
Graphics Card: ATI Radion 4870
Intel Core Q9550 with 4Gb RAM
1.5TB HDD

I regularly defrag and cleanup and have never had a problem with other games.

Does anything stand out to anybody as to why it may not be working?

Thank you for your help!

what are you're settings in the "video" tab on the Orbiter Launchpad ?

It doesn't get that far. I click on the icon and get the error!

What version of Orbiter is it? Also, I dunno if it can run at that resolution.

Something's telling me you should do a checkdisk.

Orbiter can't pull the list of render devices from directx. What directx version do you have?

Thanks for all the replies,

I'm using DirectX9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

I understand it may not run in the res of my monitors, but most games autoadjust right? Or at least give you the option to adjust the game res?

I've tried the original orbiter and even the newest base release (060929)

Thanks

I suppose you could try knocking down the resolution you're displaying at and see if that helps. Otherwise, maybe it's a DX9 problem? Admittedly I've never seen that error.

Just looking;

I can see that one of my DX files (d3dim700.dll) is missing! Will try and reinstall, then lower the res to see if that works. Will let you all know what the problem was if I eventually find out.

Thanks alot

Your desktop resolution should be irrlevant at orbiter startup.
Try switching to a mono-monitor setup. Maybe the driver is screwing directx somehow.

But first, what operating system are you using? Are all your user rights in order?

I'm using Windows XP Home, I think my user rights are all in order..?

Should be no problem on XP.
I suspected you didn't have rights to access DX.

also try dxdiag (start -> run -> dxdiag) and confirm everything is good

I'm into Orbiter Launch pad!!!!

Okay, so far it seems to have been the missing d3dim700.dll from DX9. I found a copy and installed it into the System32 folder and hey presto, into Orbiter Launchpad.

So thank you all for your time and help with this problem, you steered me in the right direction.

Best wishes to all!

Have fun!
But observe orbiters maximum resolution (Directx 7s actualy). Forum search will tell you what it is.

I've just tried it in 2048x1152 and computer said yes!

Well, the maximum resolution is somewhere around 3072x1280, so you have some room to maneuvre :P
