Hello everyone. I have been playing orbiter for about a month now. Awesome sim! I have been flying the stock delta glider with the latest version 060929. I have downloaded DeltaTweak 0.2 and no matter what I do, I cannot get the DG to reenter atmosphere at 40 deg AoA. I keep bouncing back into orbit. I thought that this tweak would alter flight characteristics to be more realistic, DG still wants to pitch down to 0 deg.:(

Can someone please help?

thanks

Pitch up to about 50 deg. Worked for me. Otherwise you'd have to use pitch AND bank

Ahhhh. Will try. I hope I did not install the tweak wrong....

Nope. :( Still does not work. Have to pitch nose down -50 deg to prevent from skipping....I am extracting tweak to my main orbiter file. Am I missing something?????

Are you coming in at the correct altitude? (PeR/ApR) I haven't used the tweak so I cannot tell you what the best numbers for them.

Firing retro and timing so pink square on map is near the Cape. As I approach the pink square, I have to pitch down near -50 deg to prevent the pink square from moving east along orbital path. If I try to pitch up to realistic +40 deg, she skips like a stone on a pond and the pink square moves east very quickly.....

I though the tweak would allow a correct +40 deg AoA throughout reentry, and the PeR point would stay put, but I see no difference at all. :(

Oh so your just using the mapMFD then, well I would suggest aerobrakeMFD.

But if you still want to use mapMFD then you have to make the pink square come much farther west. Have it somewhere over Mexico. try to have your ApR somewhere about 6.48 before you do a reentry burn. That might help.

AerobrakeMFD??

AeroBrakeMFD
Add-on Description:
The MFD calculates the path on the atmosphere.
You can use for precise reentry, aerobrake, aerocapure etc. etc...

The glide path is integrated keeping account of lift and drag.

The new version is for Orbiter 060504 patch 1.

There is a new command: Hypotetic DeltaV, to calculate the reentry path before deorbit burn.

This version accept target as coordinates (long and lat) and not only by base name

Make sure that you maintain the folder structure when unzipping.
You should be prompted to overwrite deltaglider.dll if everything went right.

SImply placing the pink square on the landing site and coming in at 40 deg AoA will indeed cause you to skip downrange unless you are doing S-turns, just like the Space Shuttle does in RL. The purpose of the high AoA is to present the belly heatshield to the wind, it does not cancel out lift. Energy must be managed by banking into S-turns to rotate your lift vector away from vertical as you bleed off velocity.

Yes. I discovered with the forum's help that re entry is much more difficult than I thought. :fool: I am able to land DG stock, but not near the Cape. Luckily it has engines! as I was thousands of klicks from the Cape!!

You should download Reentry MFD and Aerobrake MFD and learn to use the two of them. Re-entry MFD is easier to use for winged vehicles, IMO, but Aerobrake is a great utility as well. Also, the GPC MFD that comes with David413's Shuttle Fleet happens to work pretty well with almost every winged vehicle I've tried, including the DG as well as the Space Shuttle, of course.

Just keep in mind that whatever instruments you use, re-entry is not easy to learn for beginners. Just keep at it.
