All of the Mercury 7 are gone now. I was 9 when John Glenn lifted off in Friendship 7. I made a mock up of a Mercury capsule out of cardboard boxes. At the time, an edition of the Weekly Reader had an illustration of the Mercury's instrument panel. I took every copy I could find and pasted one inside my mock up. I spent hours in that thing imagining liftoff, orbit, retro fire (if you remember, there was some concern about Friendship 7's heat shield so mission control had Glenn retain the retro rockets rather than jettisoning them to help keep the heat shield in place), and reentry.
We may not have been the first in orbit and the whole process was a Cold War proxy for a battle between East and West but the men and women behind the space program really accomplished great things. Rest In Peace John Glenn and all of the Mercury 7...

I got to chat with John several times over lunch while I was a student at Ohio State University. He had an office on campus and I would eat lunch in a small common area outside it. Didn't even realize his office was on that floor until he sat down next to me and asked where I had gotten the slice of pizza I was eating  . Great man, and a great Ohioan. God Speed! :salute:
