"Spaceflight on the cheap" could become a reality with this. All you need is an ICBM, a good EVA suit and a parachute

The whole thing could have a mass smaller than 500 kg.

50 Years Ago Today: The Flight of Aurora 7

Fifty years later, the flight of the fourth American in space (and second to orbit the Earth) is celebrated in this video tribute to Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter produced by NASA Television.

N1 Videos

I found three rare N1 videos... I'm not sure if all of them are actually the N1 (as in, is the explosion the real deal?) but it is worth posting. Remember that the N1 was Russia's attempt at a Moon rocket.

All 4 of the N-1 launches were unsuccessful, sadly, but the videos were accurate. In the end it was simply too complicated!

The first video, although they say it is footage of the first launch, is actually footage of the N1-6L launch which was the third test flight which occurred in 1972. The second video is footage of the first launch (N1-3L) in 1969. The third video is N1-5L, also in 1969 which was not a test of the launch abort system, the rocket in fact exploded several seconds after launch, destroying the pad and surrounding complexes. It did trigger the launch abort system, however and I'm not sure if I've ever seen that particular footage of it.

The N-1 was a great project, and the lattice structure was especially mass-efficient for an HLV, sadly the engines originally designed for it were not ready and the program was rushed in a desperate attempt to follow the USA. So numerous smaller engines (36 !) were put instead of those that were originally planned. The resulting system was awfully complex and vulnerable to failures. Also it didn't get the proper testing time.

Maybe that with the current tech, the computerized engine cutoff system responsible for handling failures could have worked. But in the early 1970's, it was hopeless.

Hmm..... this failure mode is very common in Orbiter (RCS mode problems anyone?), but it's the first time I've seen in real life.

I have that on DVD. One of my favorites, next to its sequel "The Dream is Alive".
