Looks rather photo-shopped.

The videos look like a rocket bleeding off energy...

The article does mention the possibility of it being a Bulava, which according to Reuters has failed on 6 of the last 11 (test)launches.

Yes, but that is no reason, but the color of the smaller exhaust plume speak against it - Bulavas are among the first solid fueled SLBMs for Russia.

I tried getting the video but failed so far...also the image does not look like a long exposure, since the intensity of the spiral is too uniform.

The later images actually look more like the blue exhaust being the rocket and the big white circle being a halo or spectre.

Urwumpe, try these videos, they work for me:

The color of the exhaust may be quite off the real balance of white in that image apparently due to overprocessing and sodium lamps within the frame. I believe the videos have it mode correct. It's mostly white.

TR1978, do you have an idea about the possible location of filming and bearing?

Yep, it was RSM-56 Bulava. The launch #13, and apparently 3rd failed in row. Looks like a 1st stage failure or a guidance failure. Did the eyewitnesses report a flash? The Dmitry Donskoy should have been in the White Sea, so the possible bearing is SE.

The big picture was taken from "Dampskipskaia" in Trømsø:

Sorry I don't know the bearing.

It was visible from Sør-Trøndelag to the north of Finnmark.

Still can't see the video, and if it was a guidance failure ( I am not convinced yet), it would have happened somewhere around second stage flight - first stage phase ends already at very low altitude for solid SLBMs.

Looks shopped to me.

I can understand that it's allegedly a "long-exposure" shot etc, etc, but something just doesn't feel right.

Looks like an Orbiter exhaust texture or a nonsense paranormal event... :p

Maybe TR1978 could talk to the people who have seen it themselves? Did it really look like on the photo in the article? The videos suggest otherwise. Any reposting of them at youtube would be nice for wider availability, by the way.

To add to the confirmation, there was a message over NAVTEX 518 kHz radio regarding the launch zone:

Then, there is only one key question: What does the photo show? That a rocket launch happened can be at this point be considered verified.

But the spiral is too large and too uniform except for being result of a spectre, but such kind of spectre is some sort of unbelievable looking at the rest of the image. There is no large cloud cover around, and only the blue cloud in the middle can act as possible source of the spectre.

The spiral shaped image makes no sense though, even the similar optical phenomena you can see in many space shuttle ET dump videos are concentric.

Somebody filming something from his monitor does not look much like a first hand source... also the first part of it shows a good glory.

Now, how it looks at the video

And at the photos published:

I've got a feeling that somebody (maybe this bald guy) decided to enhance the visual effect by laying over the pale spiral on the ready picture.

The last video which shows the object without any modifications looks badly like a solid fuel rocket spinning out of control, but it does not have the spirals added to it, the blue cloud in the images should be it's representation.

I agree, it smells of image enhancement. But the unedited video looks really like a failed solid rocket motor...

Have they got another Bulava or is it a reservation for the area just in case?
