I had a problem with uploading an add-on to Orbit Hangar. It seems that by default WinZip 12.0 optimizes for best compression, instead of legacy.
The flag is in Options/Configuration/Miscellaneous. So some downloads wouldn't extract with this compression.

I unchecked this flag, re-zipped, and uploaded as a "Legacy" version.

It made a difference to the file size, it went from 54MB to 62MB quite a difference especially for dial-ups.

Whats the consensus on WinZip versions, should we move to 12.0 only, keep the "Legacy" version, upload both versions?

If you can, upload the Legacy. If you want more compression, use RAR format

I'm not familiar with RAR, and I've just purchased WinZip so I wan't to get my money's worth!
Maybe If I just put a note in the add-on description on Orbit Hangar, that WinZip 12.0 Best Compression is used, and previous versions will not extract it correctly?

No, only WinZip 12 will.

Hence the problem.

Wouldn't that mean I need to buy WinZip 12 to be able to use your addon? Sorry mate, I'd love to try your addon, but I would have trouble justifying thirty bucks for it, given I have no other compelling reason to buy WinZip.

I don't want any one to buy WinZip, just looking for comments and solutions to the problem. If it needs two uploads, one Best Compression, one Legacy, I'm happy to do it.

No surprise, but I had three goes at getting it right!

Had a note from Vash of Orbit Hangar Mods that some people couldn't extract the archive, thats when I found the flag above. I hadn't thought about it, I assumed older versions would be able to decompress it, it sems not!

Its this:-[ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3788"]EGNT(Newcastle_UK)Ver2[/ame]

I use WinRAR from long time and don't have attention to change it.
It's quite simple and powerful archiver...you could compress to the zip and rar archive.
Compressed to zip windows read it and extract no need for extra tool.
I was compress to rar but lot of people cant open it so now I put into zip.

Here is sample of WinRAR compression of mesh folder of 107 MB.

Is use rar myself. I use the rar.exe with total command and am more than happy with it for over a decade now.
There are reasons rar is the choice of the scene.

I didn't know RAR could compress to zip files, I thought it just did its own format. I'll have a go with it and see how it behaves.

Ouch, no way to get a refund huh? Try the free open source program called "7-zip". Extracts/creates zip archives and much more...
It even has it's own compression file format, which compressed Orbiter's "Mesh" directory to just over 4 MB.
