Project XR2 Ravenstar - Mk II

Lee and Kara seem quite stiff and unnatural with their arms sticking out like that.
Could you fix this for the mk II?

lol. I take it all back, terrible name;)

Acronym names, yeah we could go there.

As for the poses, I assume you mean the EVA pose? they're all going to feel stiff and unnatural, since there's no animation with UMMU... they're posed for flight in a turbopack, since whatever you do they're always gonna look a bit silly skating around on the ground.

I personally like Song Bird from that list you posted. Keeps the bird name theme and it has a nice grace to it. :)

I can't believe no one has suggested --

The Nano.

Maybe NanoStar?

Okay. Being serious, Songbird has my vote.

Of course then if you paint it yellow you'd have "The Canary."

Canary yellow? It's quite a fetching look;)

I think i like 'Songbird' the most too... i'll have to mention these to Doug. Thanks for all the suggestions:)

Are any of you old enough to remember Sky King? A TV series from the early 50's. The featured aircraft was a twin Cessna (a T-50 and a 310B in the second season) named Songbird.

Hum... IMO, the proposed XR0 dosen't look like it's able to take off by itself - perhaps it should be named as such, like "FallingStone", as a stone can't take off by itself either.

Wow - this thing is looking cool!

Just a couple of thoughts i've had:

1. Will it eventually be possible to be able to open the rear door in the XR2 cockpit, open the rear door to the songbird, then transfer crew using UMMU?

2. Maybe some sort of grapple mechanism could be included inside the nose, so the nose could be opened on orbit, the grapple mechanism extended, & then be used to grapple modules & move them around to build a space station. That would enhance the purpose of this vessel, I think.

3. Will a skin be available that matches the skin of the XR2?

Can't wait for the new release of the XR2:speakcool:

Ha, that way (painting) the new Songbird reminds me a lot to this famous little yellow submarine!

Now all we have to do, is make the XR2 green, and we're all done! :P

yes i totally see what you mean, it reminded me of that too... Thunderbirds were way cool for their time.

Thunderbird might a cool name for it...

As for it being 'flyable' i wouldn't know since i've no way of testing it for real... the shape is a compromise to make it fit into the bay and do everything else i want it to do. The ship will certainly have plenty of power however, pulse detonation engines are very powerful, it also has rockets and may well have hover thrusters too.

Orbinaut pete,

1, thats the idea

2, possibly, though there's not enough room behind the nosecone, there's just a bulkhead and lee's... they'd be located somewhere else... I'd like to do that, but i've no idea what the coding issues would be be. perhaps another addon could be modified to do that... like a couple of mini manipulators.

3, i expect the default skins will be similar.

I'd suggest dumping the hover thrusters. She won't have enough range (okay, Delta V capability :P) to reach the lunar surface directly from Earth.
Perhaps a lunar vehicle that the XR0 would dock to (not using docking, as surface docking is not supported in Orbiter.) that would have hover thrusters yet utilise the XR0s fuel. Don't know how it would be coded though.

How about an (optional) frame that fits in the bay with the zero. It could connect to several ports on the zero to get fuel and commands.
That frame could have engines positioned for lunar flight.

I second that.

Well, the XR0 may be a little tight in the bay, but maybe.
All this engine frame has to be is an engne. Better to have such an external engine then an internal one that needs opening/closing doors, etc.

@Coolhand:
What about calling the XR0 "Zero" or "Zeke", like the WWII fighter plane?

This will be capable of operation on the moon, if it can't make it there directly from the earths surface like the xr2, it could always refuel or catch a lift with another vehicle. Obviously wouldn't be the most comfortable way of traveling.;)

I'm not keen on an extra 'frame'... But its an interesting idea and makes sense from a number of angles.

I think there are two solutions, one is to have conventional hover thrusters the other is to have an additional set of landing legs for tailsitting operations, though thats challenging to design because they have to be fairly long to allow access to the rear hatch and space in the vehicle is hard to come by.

Nah... just have it be rotatable in such a low G environ... It lands on stout legs on it's tail, with too little room to get in or out that way, then once landing is complete, it rotates down to a conventional orientation. Take off is the same thing in reverse.

Lots of different ways to go about that, and it could be a challenge in it's own right, but it gets around the problem of having to have it high enough with enough room to get in and out that way when landed.

Maybe you've got something else in mind that i just cant see, but however i picture it, That sounds really goofy, unsafe, and requiring even more engineering than landing legs.
